I don't typically wear tampons, but I have a friend who has a hot tub and invited me in. I didn't go in because I'm on my period, but I was wondering if I wore a tampon if it'd be okay? I typically just avoid hot tubs and pools and such when I'm on my period. Can you tell me all you know? Would there be any, well, leakage or anything to be warned about?

I totally understand how you feel, if you've tried tampons before and found them difficult or uncomfortable its easy to just avoid water. But for as long as you have your period, dealing with it is going to be 1/4 of your time so its a good idea to get used to it.
You can absolutely wear a tampon in a hot tub or swimming pool and as long as you are wearing the right absorbency(normally regular, but super if you have a heavy flow) you should have no leaks and be fine. If you're not used to tampons try a small one, perhaps a teen brand, something with a plastic applicator (I really like the new U by Kotex line). Make sure you read the instructions with the tampons and follow the directions and you should be just fine.

What is usually worn in private hot tubs?

I am going to a small get together to celebrate my friend's purchase of a hot tub. I am not sure if it is expected to go in topless, nude, or wearing a full bikini. My friend is only inviting a few female friends, so no guys will be there.

Generally speaking I'd ask before going to the party what kind of swimwear is expected, if any.
Most private hot tub parties I've gone to pretty much everybody, myself included went nude. Same goes with swim parties if the pool area is private.
Base it though too on your comfort level. If you're ok with being nude in a social setting, go for it. If not, wear what makes you comfortable, even if you're the only one clothed. I'm a nudist so it's no big deal for me to go nude in mixed company. If swimwear is expected, I wear my speedos and I always make sure to take my own towel.
