Both places are going to be pretty pricey and regardless of you turning 18 they are still going to want a chaperon over the age 21 present so that's a major factor. If you just want a chill b-day celebration try the Embassy suites out near SFO. They have the pool and hot tub you can utilize and will even give you all free breakfast in the morning. Plus it's really not that expensive and they are used to dealing with birthday parties. You will still need a chaperon but at least you won't be out a bunch of cash

My family and I want to move to California the summer I start college..?

My family and I live in Michigan. I am a junior and will be graduating from high school in May 2012. My dad has had back surgery and his back seems to be getting gradually worse, along with my mother who just had her spleen die on her. I wanted to get some information on if moving to California would be good for their health because of the warmer weather unlike Michigan. I plan on going to college in California, so we were all thinking we would move their as a family. I have done some lengthy research and realize the taxes and cost of living their is high, but we have money, so that's not really an issue. I guess what I'm asking here is a few questions.
1. Will it help my parents issues with being in a relatively warmer climate year round compared to Michigan?
2. Is it smart to go to college in California?
3. What are some other reasons we should move there?
4. Is California as bad as people make it out to be?
We want to make a smart decision, not just one based on the dream of living in California.

I'll try and address all your questions to the best of my knowledge.

1) A warmer year round climate should improve your dad's back pain a little bit. I also recommend that you get a hot tub. If he sits in this daily for at least 20-25 minutes each day, his back muscles should feel better because of the hot and bubbly water that penetrates the muscles.

2) There are a lot of great colleges in California, for example: Stanford, UCLA, UC Berkeley and others. California is one of the biggest states and has a lot of beautiful cities. With the housing market the way it is, you should be able to find a nice house in a suburb where you can "set up shop" and get you and your family back on the right track.

3) California has Los Angeles/Hollywood so you could go and visit that. Also, Yosemite National Park is in California. If you get a chance go and visit. Furthermore, Redwood National Forest is in California as well. These are all national landmarks and should be an awesome trip for any family looking to travel around the state of California.

4) If you listen to the negative things people say in this life, you'll think everything is bad. People in general tend to be negative. If you continue doing more research on different cities in California, I'm sure you'll be able to find an area similar to the one you're living in now in Michigan.

My husband and I (44 years old) are looking for a place to spend our anniversary. We can only make it a long weekend due to childcare. We live in Northern Virginia so we'd like to stay within 2 1/2 hours. We don't know the area as we are new here. Does anyone know of any nice areas maybe on the water,antiques,real nice private rooms,cottage, hot tubs on a deck...HaHa! I'm asking for alot!
We have been to Charlottesville,VA and Annapolis, MD.

Here's your ticket Juniper. The place I'm going to recommend is no longer in Virginia but once was. It's Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Maybe a 2 hour drive from Fairfax. Specifically, The Country Inn (see thecountryinnatberkeleysprings.com). It's in the heart of Berkley Springs (correct name Bath, WV) right next to the 'springs' and state run spa. The food in their dining room is outstanding. There are all kinds of spa packages available and all kinds of antique shops within walking distance; in fact everything in Berkeley Springs is within walking distance. It's a great place for a weekend getaway. Take either 7 or 50 west to Winchester and 522 north to Berkeley Springs. I would take 7 because 50 is slower. Berkeley Springs is an unforgettable Place. You owe it to yourselves to give it a try.

What does it do to an unborn child when a mother lays in the tanning bed?

I am not asking this for myself. I am just wondering in general, does the things a mother does before she finds out she is pregnnat, in the first few weeks harm the baby. I know ppl who are not ttc go on with their regular lives, like laying in the tanning beds, having xrays and taking meds. Does these things harm the baby. Just wondering.

I tanned with my first through out the entire pregnancy. I just had to make sure that I drank plenty of fluids before I went. Consult your own doctor if you are concerned with pregnancy and tanning beds.

According to two doctors, Robert L. Brent M.D., Ph.D. and Gary Zeman, Sc.D, Ch.P, (who conducted a study at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory about pregnancy and tanning beds), mothers-to-be have no reason to be concerned about getting an indoor tan.


Although both doctors are in agreement that they UVA and UVB rays emitted by the bulbs in tanning beds can be as dangerous as the rays of the sun to human skin tissues, those rays do not penetrate far enough into the body to harm a fetus.


However, some mid-wives, obstetricians and gynecologists do have some concerns about pregnancy and tanning beds. During the first trimester of pregnancy, these health experts do not advise pregnant women to indulge in any activity that might raise their body temperature such as hot tubs, saunas and tanning beds.


The overheating of the mother's body (also called hyperthermia) is associated with some spinal malformations. It should also be noted that typically hyperthermia develops after the mother's body is exposed to temperatures of 102 Fahrenheit or more for several hours.


Fortunately, government regulatory standards in Canada and the United States typically limit the maximum temperature for commercial tanning devices to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, there does not seem to be any reported incidents of hypothermia related to pregnancy and tanning beds.


Still, it comes to pregnancy and tanning beds, there has been a suggested link between ultraviolet rays and folic acid deficiency. Folic acid is responsible for preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida.


Some health experts also maintain that the skin of a pregnant mother is more sensitive to ultraviolet rays and may be at a greater risk of acquiring unexpected sunburn. If you are concerned about your pregnancy and tanning beds and then you are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays from both the sun and tanning beds.


If you do decide to get an indoor tan,
doctors also recommend staying as cool as possible and drinking plenty of fluids to avoid light-headedness and dehydration.


There have been no negative incidents or statistics reported regarding pregnancy and tanning beds however a mother-to-be may want to take note that in general, doctors advice avoiding tanning beds until after the first three months of pregnancy. After the first trimester, it is considered to be acceptable to get an indoor tan as long as you are lying on your side in the tanning bed (to prevent restricted blood flow) or standing up in a booth.


Most salon owners are aware that tanning bed technology is a relatively new and that very few studies have been done on the effects of tanning beds and pregnancy. This is also why most reputable salons require a note from a doctor before offering a tanning session to pregnant individuals.

6 of us want to go to the PA mountains that are closer to Pittsburg (Altoona area), and stay for 3 nights (from Dec. 30th to Jan 2nd). We want to get a house(or cabin) with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, fireplace. Something like a hot tub would be nice, maybe even a pool table, grill... Close to a mountain (we love to ski, and snowmobil)
