Q. at a spa resort of some kind? Preferably in the US, if not in NY--or perhaps someplace exotic in Asia or Europe. We're looking for a hot tub where it can just be the two of us spending time alone without the massages and spa treatment packages that I see from my Google results. Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer
There are a number of places in the US and elsewhere in the world.

Here is a list we know of:

What can I do for myself to loosen tight, knotted muscles?

koyaanisqa

I have a number of knots in my legs, arms and shoulders from recent exercise. I need to constrain the scope of answers here: No videos, no chiropractors, no hot tubs (I don't own one) or spas, no pharmaceuticals and I'm not going to go buy or sign up for anything. I'm hoping to find out what I can do myself, right where I am, to help loosen tight, knotted muscles. Thank you!
If I'm doing all the things I can to loosen them up, how long does it take for them to finally relax? Hours, days, weeks?

Answer
Stretching, exercise, a warm bath, and self massage (the tennis ball) are all great ways to alleviate the pain of sore muscles. Each of the already mentioned methods of treatment are great for relieving your current symptoms, but it seems to me that you are not only looking for short term relief, but a way to prevent this problem from returning. If you are always chasing symptoms you may never resolve the issue and it will be a life long battle. It is essential that you find out why you have developed these "knots" in the first place.

The 'knots' you are referring to is calling a trigger points and are essentially a local area within a muscle that is tender to touch and has become contracted and unable to relax. Some common causes of trigger points are trauma, excessive cooling, and overuse. It seems to me from what you have described that you fit into the overuse category. Overuse is often the result of prolonged poor posture or poor movement patterns. Our bodies are terrific at adapting to demands forced upon us, but these adaptations are not always healthy ones. For example, a person that sits at a computer for 8 hours everyday with an improperly set up chair/desk might develop a posture that shows their face and head being drawn toward the computer screen with their chin jutting out in front in order to get closer to read the monitor. After a day or two, this person may not notice any problems, but the head weighs between 8-10 pounds and when its placement is shifted forward the muscles of the upper back and neck any now required to increase their work load (overuse). To think about what it may feel like to carry this 8-10 pound head in a forward position, think about carrying a bowling ball at your shoulder with your forearm directly underneath it (as if you were carrying a tray of drinks), you could probably do this for a while. But, if you were to move that ball forward a few inches and hold it there all day I think you would appreciate pretty quickly the increased stress that a forward head places on the upper back and neck as that ball would become quite heavy. The point I am trying to illustrate is that identifying any postural or movement patterns that are placing increased stress on different areas of your body and correcting them will be the key to long term elimination of your trigger points.

I know you said you wanted to do it all yourself, but sometimes it takes the knowledge and expertise of a professional to be able to identify and treat your problem areas. If we all had the ability to identify and treat every condition in the world there would be no need for health professionals, but that's not the case. We are here for a reason. There are a number of professions that assess posture and movement patterns such as physiotherapists, athletic trainers, kinesiologists, and chiropractors. However, not all off these professions treat all tissues that can become negatively affected by increased stress.

Research shows that when a joint loses some of its normal motion (due to a change in stresses applied to that joint), movement of joints above and below will also change to compensate (or adapt) to this loss of motion. This change in movement pattern will result in the brain signaling muscles in the area to tighten up to provide greater stability in the face of increased stress. If this stress and loss of movement persists, and the muscle is required to contract for a prolonged period of time, it will remain in a contracted state and will become unable to relax. Sound familiar? The end result of loss of joint movement is a trigger point. For this reason, the best mode of treatment for a person with your condition would be a chiropractor.

A knowledgeable chiropractor will treat your current trigger points to reduce pain as well as help you to retrain your postural imbalances, stretch/strengthen muscles and restore any losses of movement you may have at affected joints. There are some practicing chiropractors that are better than others, this is a reality of any profession whether it be an auto-mechanic, an athlete or a brain surgeon. I would recommend speaking to people in your community who have had a good experience with their chiropractor to find one with a good reputation.

Good luck!

Last time i went i stayed at the Disney World Boardwalk and i absolutly loved it as i was 12 years old. i am now 14 and we are going again and i want to know a good hotel to stay at. When i was 6 years old i stayed at the animal kingdom and i do not remember most of it.

I wanted to stay in a hotel i haven't stayed at yet, but if i can't find a good one i think i might stay at the boardwalk again.

Parents said budget isn't a problem so the hotel can be any price.
Thanks

You are definitely in for a treat. If there is one thing at Walt Disney World that I love and know about, it's the Wilderness Lodge, a Deluxe Resort located on Bay Lake and only a boat or bus ride from the Magic Kingdom. I even have the soundtrack of the lobby in my iPod! Trust me, I'm obsessed.

The first thing you see when you walk through the doors is the lobby. The lobby. These words play in my mind like a beautiful symphony. Given the fact that the gist of the building is made out of wood, it's good to know that none of the wood was actually taken from living trees. All the trees used were "standing dead". The lobby is where you can find some good eats, souvenirs, check-in and concierge desks, and theming that will simply take your breath away. In the back of the lobby, there is a bubbling brook that continues out of the lodge, down a beautiful waterfall, into the swimming pool, through a hot spring, and into Bay Lake. Wow, right?

The standard rooms are the perfect size for a family of four people, and they are themed wonderfully. And although I have never stayed in one, the suites, like the Presidential Suites, are fit for a king, much less a president. The staff is always kind, and caring as are all the staff members in WDW.

Food is plentiful, as there are two full service restaurants and one counter service restaurant. The two full service restaurants are Artist Point, which is a high end fancy shmancy place, and Whispering Canyon which is exactly the opposite. In fact there is never much whispering going on in this home style restaurant.

The pool, which is directly located on the courtyards in the rear of the lodge, is one of the most beautiful pools on property in my opinion, and I have stayed at most of the resorts. Here you will find the Trout Pass Pool Bar and Fire Rock Geyser that erupts every hour on the hour. There are also two hot tub spas for those days when you just really want to relax. Beach access is also included, but alas, no swimming allowed in Bay Lake.

Well, looking back at what I wrote, I really hope that I answered your question. Disney's Wilderness Lodge never fails to amaze.

What is the best way for 2 adults without children to see Walt Disney World at the end of Jan.?

We are going to WDW for 5 days without children and would like to eat at the best restaurants for adults and experience all WDW has to offer. Any suggestions or recommendations on where to start?
We would like it to be more of a romantic, fun trip for 2.

Answer
My last two trips to Disney were with my husband and they were the best Disney trips I've had. We love to do things that make you feel like a kid again, but also enjoy doing the adult stuff too. Here are some of our favorites..

- Magic Kingdom is my absolute favorite park and, in my opinion, the most romantic, especially at night. It's so magical that it makes it romantic (I know it sunds corny, but it's true). The fireworks are beautiful to watch with your special someone.

- Get a couples massage at the Grand Floridian Spa (or any other spa). It may be overpriced, but you're on vacation so why not splurge.

- We stayed at the French Quarter last time. Most nights we would sneak a bottle of wine to the hot tub later on when no one was in there.

- Downtown Disney. I love going there at night to shop and get dinner. Wolfgang Puck is always delicious.

- La Nouba (Downtown Disney) is Disney's Cirque du Soleil. We went once and really enjoyed it.

- Drink around the world in Epcot (Have a drink in every country).

Restaurants.. Make your reservations ASAP!

- San Angel Inn in the Mexico Pavillion (Epcot) is one of our favorite places to eat. I love the ambiance and the food. It's definitely one of the more romantic restaurants. We always plan dinner so that we can catch the Illuminations fireworks when we are done. Take the little boat ride that goes through the restaurant too.

- The Grand Floridian Cafe has very good food. One of the best meals I've had in Disney.

- We always go to Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater and Prime Time (both in Hollywood Studios). We love the fun themes.

- La Cellier Steakhouse, Canada Pavillion (Epcot) is supposed to be the best. It was booked when I tried to make reservations months ahead. Definitely try it out if you get a chance.

- Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe (MK) is a counter service restaurant, but it's a little different than the others. After you get your food, there's a room where you can eat while you watch an alligator play jazz on the piano. Very cute and fun. If you want something quick, go there.

I hope you have a great time!!

What are good sleepover game ideas?

Q. It's at a hotel. So we can't do much. Or be loud. But here's the thing...

We DO have an indoor pool, a hot tub inside our room, spa, and free fitness center. But that'll only last us for about 5 hours out of the 24 hour sleepover. So what do we do? It's...

two 8 year olds, three 12 year olds, and one 13 year old. Oh, and we can't do stuff like, prank boys, or truth or dares. Because our parents and us have joint rooms. GRR! So what can we do for fun? We already have just 5 games planned. Including makeovers. So what else is there?

PS: What's good pranks to play on the first one to fall asleep? NO hand in water, that whipcream feather thing, or anything like that! We don't want them messy. Just extremely embarrassed.
