is #6 aluminum a sufficient conductor to supply a 200 amp panel..using 60% continuous load, 30% continuous?

Derrick Zo
OK .here's the scenario..we did our new service entrance / passed inspection / then were told by the PG&E technician, ( who may or may not be a subcontractor..making money per job???)
that will do the work that it was going to cost $1000.00 up front..before he even looks at the job.. and if he needed to run a larger conductor it would cost upwards of 2000+!!
we called PG&E to confirm we had to pay 1000.00 up front and the PG&E service phone rep told us that there was something wrong with his asking for money before he even looked at the job.... so then he came out and said our old #6 ( 1930's ) Aluminum wire was fine. and there would be not charge..
So the question is.. is he just trying to oet out of the new service drop because we make a stink? or he does not want PG& E looking closely at his project management /billing practices...or is #6 Aluminum fine to bring the ENTIRE 200 amp to our house..
we just moved in and are installing a 220 welder, (90 amps!! ) a hot tub (50 amps ) a green house for an organic herb garden, with 6 100 w 220 ballasts, we will also have 2 air conditioners, and we have a 220 v dryer/ large sub zero fridge and 4 gaming computers all with 800 watt p/s.. + 2 large LCD tv's.. and large pumping stereo..
by our calculations we need more that an antiquated 60 amp brittle aluminum main feed from PG&E.
according to wehat i have researched online... # 6 is rated up to 85 amps, and we would need 1/0 to get us to 180 amps..
professional answers only thanks...
thanks in advance!
sorry.. 30% non-continuous load.
sorry.. 30% non-continuous load.
our feeders from the weather head to the meter is 3/0 copper. (on size too big ..(less resistance!)
so, when we are pulling 190 amp for an extended perios of time.. will the 1930's
brittle # 6 Aluminum cook at PG&E's crimps ? or wil out power quality to safely run our equipment suffer in any way from the large current draw through PG&E's old #6 Aluminum?
Answer
200 amp panel should require 2/0 cu with a 1/0 cu neutral service entrance feed to the panel.
Power company's usually install 1/0 AL service conductor for a 200 Amp overhead service cable to the customers entrance and 4/0 or 350MCM AL cable for an underground service.
#6 may have been adequate if it were copper?
In Omaha, Ne. - all old #6 cu is replaced with #4 AL for 150 amp and smaller. 200 amp is supplied with 1/0 Al.
Here - No copper is, or has been, installed to residential or commercial buildings, by the Power Company, since 1960.
For a 200 amp entrance - #6 AL will allow a serious voltage drop, below the minimum of 117 volts, that is not acceptable in this area, (range is 117v to 125v). A number of appliances and equipment will overheat/be damaged if allowed to operate at too low of a voltage.
Obtain a digital multi-tester to check, from time to time, the voltage at the panel. If it is unacceptable - ask if they provide a free service to install a recording voltmeter at your main panel lugs to monitor the voltage. Our Company does as a free service to the customer and to insure proper operation.
Most - if not all - Power Companies have regulations and policies reguarding inadequate delivery of proper voltage. Ask what their minimum and maximum voltage policy is??
Here - there is NO charge for installing a new Overhead Service or - replacing the existing service to meet the customers demands because, - a larger customer entrance - means more consumption by the customer - resulting in more revenue for the Power Company.
ANY new Residential or Commercial U.G service - in an Underground area - is free to the occupant.
A request for a Residential Underground Dip, (underground cable installed in a normally Overhead area) - is a flat charge.
Any Overhead commercial service is free ,
A request for an underground Commercial service, in an Overhead area, is a charge - ONLY IF - the three year - customer estimated bills -are less than installation cost.
This $1000 or $2000 charge does not sound on the up and up??
