Hot-tub Chemicals?

Q. I have looked on alot of sites and I cannot find what I am looking for. My question is what chemicals do you use in a hottub to make it sanitary? and also how do you shock a hot-tub? 10 points to whoever is the most helpful, please list all of the chemicals.

Thanks

Answer
try these out. there are many choices for sanitizing.

Mineral Sanitizers,

chlorine,

bromine,

Ultraviolet UV Sanitizer, Sanitizes with UV rays instead of chemicals.

ionization-oxidation systems, proven to eliminate bacteria, algae, and most viruses.

Install an ozonator for cleaner water. Ozonators convert oxygen into ozone.

Shocking a spa or hot tub refers to the application of non-chlorine shock or hydrogen peroxide. The purpose is to break down the combined chlorine, organic waste and contamination. Products such as sodium dichlor and non-chlorine shock are used for this purpose, with spas utilizing chlorine, bromine, ozonation, ultraviolet treatment, mineral purifiers or ionization.

try this for the shock treatment, Oxy Spa Non-chlorine MPS spa & pool shock

I am getting ready to start the hot tub up for the winter. What do I need in the form of chemicals from the start up?

Answer
First thing everytime you put new water into your hot tub or pool is you have to balance the water. First test your alaklinity. It needs to be between 80-120ppm. You cna adujst it upwards by adding Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate/Sodium hydrogen carbonate) next adjust the ph to 7.2-7.8. YOU want it as close as you can to 7.4-7.5. Next adjust the Calcium level to 250ppm-400ppm, by adding Calicum Carbonate (Hardness increaser). After all of th add your sanitizer, being Bromine 35 ppm, or Chlorine 1-3ppm. I hope you have a CD ozonater and perhaps a mineral stick also of copper or silver. I really like using a non-cholrine shock...MPS. Of course there's are othersanitizers like biguinde and hydrogen peroxide for a shock by Baquaspa or Bioguard. I am not a fan of them, especially if you have any kind of breathing issues.

If possible take you water to a hot tub store and have them test it. I cannot stress ths step enough since then you will have a nice computerized record 6x a year showing you have nice perfectly balanced water then when the heater goes you will be able to not let the manufacture say your heater was destroyed form improper water chemistry.

The more things you use too by the way that are not needed if your water is perfectly balanced like water clarifier, fragrances and foam dispensers will cause more peoblems by dreating more total disolved solids to be in the water there fore making it harder to balance and keep clean. Be sure to clean your filters properly with a filter cleaner. Bromine is more stable at high temperatures then chlorine.

Outdoor hot tub ran fine for two years and one morning the breaker is flipped. Reset the breaker and it flips?

satine

Could this be a worn heating element?
It is the GFCI breaker that flips. The hot tub has it's own room and it's own breaker box. Nothing else runs from it.

Thank you all so much for your answers!

Answer
That would be the first place to check.
If you can disconnect (unplug) your heating element it would help to determine if it is the element or a short to ground in the motor

Siphon problem from cold to hot water when adding outside line to cold line.?

Q. Siphoning hot water through kitchen faucet after tapping into "COLD PIPE" to add another "outside faucet" to side of house. Now getting hot water outside due to siphoning action through kitchen faucet.

Answer
I don't see how it could siphon off the hot side since the water is just bypassing the line leading up to the faucet and going out the outdoor spigot. Is this new outside faucet installed on the side of the house or buried underground then stubbed out a distance away? If the latter, the water could be getting heated by the ground if it's exposed to direct sunlight.
If the water is real hot then you might of tapped into the hot water line by accident. Some plumbers doing new homes will run the hot and colds to the sinks then T off those to run the lines to the commodes, tubs and washer hose bibs thru the wall studs. Those aren't color coded with paint nor tape so can be easy to T into the wrong one since both are the same temperature when the water is shut off.

How to repair small leaks in a fiberglass Jaccuzzi hot tub?

whoever2

The shell of my "older" (pre-1995) Jaccuzzi hot tub has several small areas that have developed leaks. Basically, the shell has just "worn through." I'm pretty certain the tub's made of fiberglass. How do I repair these leaking spots? ..... and have them water tight again of course?! THANKS!

Answer
Sand the places that need repair. You have to do this so the patch will stick.

Get a "Bondo" automotive fiberglass repair kit and use that to patch the holes.

The patches will need to be finished by sanding and filling with a mix of the fibreglass resin and "microballoons... or "Bondo Ultimate" to get a smooth surface.

The patches will be visible... unless you go through with completely refinishing the interior of the hot tub. But at least they'll quit leaking.

What is the most expensive Small Hot tub?

Ste87r45p3

Im not asking about a 19 foot mega hot tub, but a 4-7 person one. NOT BUILD BY AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT A COMPANY! What is the most expensive one? What kinds have the televisions and gaming consoles in them? what is the most reliable and expensive brands? What accesories can one have built into a hot tub? any other good questions you can think of, write em below! Thanks!!!

Answer
I dont know, but I SERIOUSLY HATE HOT TUBS. KEEP THEM CLEAN, BECAUSE I KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAD DIED FROM IT AND HAD TO GET THEIR HANDS AND LEGS CUT OFF BECAUSE OF GERMS FROM THE BACTRIA IN THE HOT TUB. But just clean it out everytime you're finished with it. :)

Adding a sub-panel for a Hot Tub?

Salami and

I need to run 240V to my hot tub.
I'd like to take my 240V from my stove (unused) and run it to a small sub-panel in my crawlspace, then have this feed the hot tub and some lighting around it.
The 240V wire running to my stove will be disconnected and will power the new panel.
From that I should have 2 hots and a neutral (although this is the braided alumminum type).
Can I use this to power the panel (providing 2 hots and neutral) while planting a seperate ground stake to run to the new panel for ground?
The Neutral from the stove cable is braided AL. but is totally isolated from the new panel to the old panel neutral bar.

Inside the new panel I'll have a 240v GFI breaker for the hot tub and
a 110V gfi for the lighting.
Is this OK? Im trying to avoid breaking down walls to run anything to my already packed old panel.

I'm in NC, and I was told I need some type of "panic button" near the tub as well - can this just be attached to a junction box near the tub?
QUIXDRAW:
Yeah I do know how to wire a GFI. Done it many times. But I've seen "professionals" stand around in a stupor when trying to wire a 3-phase.
Folks like you create this dilemma.
Who am I going to trust? The incompetent professionals, the "master electrician" who talks down to others (while shouting in caps), or myself?

Answer
Come off of the line side of the panel to feed a sub panel. From sub panel run a disconnect. From disconnect to hot tub. This is my hubbys way of doing it and hes a commercial electrician I would call a pro in though. Good Luck!!!

i have 4 person hot tub 110v how long for water to heat up?

If you are filling it with cold water it will take over night to get to around 100 F ( a nice temp for a hot tub) I don't know what kind of heater Maddi has but it is truly amazing.

WEEKEND AWAY IN THE UK WITH PRIVATE HOT TUB?

Q. I'm looking to take my boyfriend away for a night (Saturday) in march 2013 and can't find a hotel with a PRIVATE hot tub/spa bath something a long those lines in the UK. We live in the West Midlands, Shropshire so would be looking for something in, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, possibly London. Does anyone know anything that would be a possibility, preferably quite cheap too - around £150. Thanks.

Hot Tub Purchase Advice?

famousauth

I'm looking into purchasing a hot tub in the next few months and I would like some guidance. I've checked out a lot of different tubs at a lot of different pricing options. I've found that they are either too expensive which is a no-brainer, but I've also seen some 'too good to be true' prices. I'm looking for good quality and decent prices. If I'm going to spend this kind of money I want to know I'm getting a good product. I'm looking for anyone with hot tub experience, places to shop, types of tubs, etc to help me out with this decision. I'm looking for a 4, 5 or 6 person and looking to spend less than 4gs (if possible).

Any help/guidance/advice is appreciated.
Thanks
To Brian,
I've actually looked into Hot Springs but they aren't really being cooperative when it comes to pricing. They just keep spam mailing me and when I talk to them, they're not giving me a straight answer. If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for yours?

Answer
I have owned both an Artesian tub and Hot Spring based on their reviews, quality, and energy efficiency. I bought the Artesian tub with my first house and then the Hot Spring with my second and I will always stick with a Hot Spring tub for sure!! I have had it for 3 years now, spent a little more but couldn't be more happy. DO not buy from a home center, yes they are cheap but as they say you get what you pay for and you don't want that electric bill each month as my neighbor does. Be careful because a LOT of dealers have spas with bells and whistles that look good but fall apart and leak later on. Again, my recommendation is Hot Spring...I love it and so does my wife and kids!

Pot Roast Dinner For Family?

russty3228

I would like to make my parents a pot roast dinner for Christmas eve.
I all ready have my pot roast recipe, i would like some suggestions on a menu for the night.
I need an appetizer, a soup, a salad, and a dessert.
Please help me before Christmas Eve.

P.S.: The main course is Pot Roast

Answer
For your appetiser, why not make up a platter of anitpasto and let everybody help themselves. don't forget to have a bowl or basket of some lovely crusty break and a variety of good quality crackers as an accompaniment.

I usually put a selection of very good quality small goods on the platter, like a variety of salamis, ham, mortadella etc, some pate, good olives, a couple of good cheeses, some marinated mushrooms (which you can buy already prepared), marinated artichokes, smoked salmon etc pretty up the platter with garnishes of fresh strawberries etc

Have a look at these to get an idea of that I am talking about

for the soup, this is a really easy, cheap but very good soup that can easily be made in advance- you might think it is a strange combination, but it is really good and the orange juice takes any bitterness away from the carrots and freshens it up.

CARROT AND ORANGE SOUP

4 tbsp. sweet butter
2 c. chopped yellow onions
12 carrots, peeled, chopped
4 c. chicken stock
1 c. fresh orange juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Grated fresh orange zest

Melt butter in pot, add onions, cover and cook over low heat until tender and lightly colored, about 25 minutes. Add carrots and stock and bring a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until carrots are very tender, about 30 minutes.

Pour soup through strainer. Transfer solids to food processor. Add 1 cup of the cooking stock and process until smooth. Return puree to pot. Add orange juice and additional stock to desired consistency.

I would also serve it with a dollop of sour cream in each bowl and a garnish of snipped chives.

a good SALAD is a Greek style salad:

cut into large dice, cucumbers, red and green capsicums (bell peppers), feta cheese, good quality tomatoes, finely slice spanish (red) onion and add large good quality olives such as Kalamata. Sprinkle with dried oregano, freshly ground pepper and dress with red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.
this salad is colourful and tasty.

DESSERT

This is a great easy to make, never go wrong recipe which seems to be universally adored.

Chocolate Mousse - Nigella Lawson serves 4-6
INGREDIENTS

150g mini marshmallows
50g soft butter
250g good dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids), chopped into small pieces
60ml hot water from a recently boiled kettle
1 x 284ml tub double cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

METHOD

1.Put the marshmallows, butter, chocolate and water in a heavy-based saucepan.
2.Put the saucepan on the hob, over heat, though keep it fairly gentle, to melt the contents, stirring every now and again. Remove from the heat.
3.Meanwhile, whip the cream with the vanilla extract until thick, and then fold into the cooling chocolate mixture until you have a smooth, cohesive mixture.
4.Pour or scrape into 4 glasses or ramekins, about 175ml each in capacity, or 6 smaller (125ml) ones, and chill until you want to eat. The sooner the better!

or, if you want something more elaborate, then Nigella's London Cheesecake is wonderful. It's become a classic in my house and I trot it out regularly.

have you ever got rich from playin' bingo?

Q. Irish Bingo

A young girl from Donegal leaves home to find work in the bright lights
of London.

She comes home 6 months later and steps out of a taxi wearing a
full-length mink coat.
"Begorrah, Colleen," says her mother. "Tis a lovely soft coat yer
wearin' an' it looks so expensive. Where did ye get that?"

Colleen replies, "Sure now, I won it at the bingo. Don't they have
wonderful prizes in London?"

When the weekend's over, Colleen returns to the bright lights, but she's
back to visit her mom a few months later. This time, when she steps out
of the taxi, she's wearing a beautiful gold wristwatch and a large
diamond ring.

Same exchange with Mom...same "Won it at bingo!"

Colleen returns to the bright lights again. A few months later, she's
back. This time she's sporting a beautiful emerald and diamond necklace
with matching bracelet and earrings.
She hands her mother 1,000 pounds and explains that she won it all in
bingo. Then she asks Mom to run her a bath as she needs to freshen up.
When Colleen gets to the washroom, there's only a quarter inch of hot
water in the bathtub. Colleen, a wee bit peeved at her Mom being so
cheap with the hot water after being handed 1,000 pounds, calls
downstairs,"Mom! sure now, didn't I ask you to run me a bath? There's
only a quarter inch of water in the tub!"

"Indade there is, me darlin," replies her Mom. "But we don't want ta be
gettin' yer bingo card wet now, do we?"

You can never fool Mom.
well, you see she's sittin' on her "bingo card"...maybe this isn't that great....

Answer
BINGO!!!!!...hahaha!! ...you can fool some of the people all of the time, & all of the people some of the time,......BUT YOU CAN'T FOOL MOM!!!!!

Hot tub and pregnant?

Q. I just found out that I am pregnant! I have been getting in a hot tub every other night for a few weeks. I am only 4 Weeks prego now. I am stopping getting in the hot tub now but should i be worried about my past usage?

Answer
When using a hot tub during pregnancy, you should make sure that the water is not too hot. This may sound funny because the very name of it is a hot tub, but you should never over heat your baby. This is much easier if you have a private hot tub. The hot tubs that are found in swimming pools always tend to be over heated. So if you have a hot tub at your house, lower the temperature a few hours prior to getting in. This can still be relaxing and enjoyable without being scorching hot. Many pregnant women use hot tubs in this fashion because they are still getting the benefits of the jets massaging their legs and back, but instead of being in hot water, they are being refreshed by cooler water.

You will also want to make sure that the water is extremely clean before you enter it. Any types of bacteria or virusâs in the water could cause infections and that is something you do not want to have to be dealing with during pregnancy.

Some people might say that it is fine to use a hot tub during at time of pregnancy and at any temperature. That is not information you want to be following. You should always make sure the water temperature is cool; anywhere under 100*F. You should also not use a hot tub in your first trimester, and always make sure the water is very clean. If youâre hot tub is not chlorinated, you should not enter it with anyone who is infected with any type of transferable illness.

Can the water temperature in a hot tub/spa be turned down and kept at a lower temperature to cool off in hot summer weather? What's the lowest setting the temperature can be adjusted to?

Answer
chemicals will work in the tub wether or not it is hot, but you should have a thermostat on your heater or a control panel that you can adjust your temp. but if you would lower it to be cold that just defeats the whole purpose of a hot tub. they hot for a reason, they relax your muscles and soothes you.

Removing my Hot Tub?

Lebanese_M

I recently purchased a new home with a built-in outdoor hot-tub, but the monthly expenses are so high so I want to get rid of it.

What i want to know is who can I get to pull the spa out from my deck, and when they do take it out what will happen to the pipes that were connected to it?

Answer
Ususally the hot tub has no external piping. (Most are filled with the outdoor garden hose)
If there is a pipe to fill it, there must be a shut off for it. disconnect the pipe anywhere after that shut off, and cap it.
The hard part is disconnecting the electricity to the tub.
If you have no clue of how to do this DO NOT ATTEMPT!
Newer hot tubs just plug into an outlet, but if yours is directly wired to the fuse box, get a pro out there. it'll take him about 5 minutes to safely disconnect everything.
As far as tub removal goes, put an ad in the paper and see if you can get a few bucks for it.
I'm looking to get one and it will cost me about 2 grand so if I see one for a steal, i'm definately going to check it out!

how much would you charge to build a dog house ... materials provided?

Q. How long do you suppose it would take you, would you charge me by the hour or by the house? house is 2'wide by 3 ' deep
How would you feel if someone charged you over $100 labor on it? would you react or just pay it? Would you wonder if you had sucker written across your forehead?
ok, the guy lives across the fence, He is *looking out for me* ... The dog weighs 11 pounds will never be big, there is no insulation it will have shingles ... MINE which have not been put on yet, the only piece of wood that was not mine is on the roof and I had a sheet over here that would have worked, I was going to trade a 29 gallon tank and stand for the labor.
barter system. He renigged.

I guess I need to stop trusting in the goodness of people, greed will push in it's ugly head and ruin the day.
I guess it is a mute point, to pay the guy and feel ripped off or not pay and cause a rift? eeny meeny miny mo... pfffffft.. I am tired.

Answer
If you only knew how many people have said, "I want something simple, it doesn't have to be perfect as long as it's functional." Only to find out they want that thing built with all kids of little extras on it. The price is relevant to the type of project you want built, and if you want quality or not. I can make a quick frame with a flat roof, slap some exterior paint on it and be out in 90 minutes. But if I find out that what you really wanted is a lot more. Or you could've met me in a Home Depot or Menards and what you didn't tell them is that your home is on the outskirts of town, and the I would have to drive 20-30 minutes to get to the job, and or buy materials. It would be hard for me to tell you $2 or $122 without some detailed plan, and location. If I had to drive 40 miles to get to the job and for some reason you don't have the correct amount or type of materials for the job, and I have to go get them or come back another day, it isn't worth $50.

So I guess it's in the details. You say it's 2' by 3' but you want a doggie door to protect the dog from the elements, and a light on the outside so you can look into the yard at night and see the dog. You might want a sheet metal roof, or ice and water shield to protect the inside from the elements, So I guess you could say that I would pay that much under certain circumstances. Maybe $50 tops if it's just a small box.

I'm worth $35 an hour, and my tools, vehicle, liability insurance, workers compensation insurance, fuel, and driving time all factor into my costs. If you're just building a wood frame with plywood walls, and 3 tab shingles on the roof $50 is really fair. If you want it on a cement slab, with with exterior wall and roofing material to match your home, painted in one or more colors, and add a vent on the wall opposite of the dog's entrance then $100-$150 is reasonable. Maybe you want really want to trick it out and build it on a pad that is 3 feet deeper than the house itself, and you cantilever hang the roof 2 feet so it's over the pad with a couple of nice wooden posts on the edge of the roof and concrete slab, to give the dog a little shaded porch to sit under.

It all depends what you want. I was told by a guy he wanted a simple 10' x 8 ' deck. But he wanted bench seats, flower boxes, metal spingles, and composite decking and posts. Composite decking requires predrilled holes, so it could be screwed to the joists. He also wanted routed edges, and clipped corners, and he needed six 42" post holes dug, and forty 80lb bags of ready mix carried from his driveway to back yard to fill the post holes with. He might be putting a hot tub on it, and the joist have to be double, or double every other one, or have joist moved to 12' apart instead of 16" apart. So you can see how a 10x8 simple deck isn't so simple.

What is better for easing leg muscle pain?

Horse ride

I had two track and field meets today, and my leg muscles really hurt, and I am wondering which is better: a cold bath or a hot bath? My mom says a hot one, and she is a therapist, and my coach says a cold one, and he is a triathlon runner. He ran the Ironman triathlon and finished! So I am (pitifully) resorting to Yahoo! Answers. Who can tell me which one is better, and works faster, because I have to go to school tomorow, and right now I can barely walk, slowly, around my house. Please help!
and please don't just base it on your own opinion, give sources so I knów it's true please.

Answer
Cold reduces inflamation immediately. For Ironman triathletes, it is a NECESSITY otherwise they wouldn't be able to walk (albeit slowly) the next day. After an Ironman or extensive endurance workout (e.g. riding a bike 100 miles or running 22 miles) ICE BATH to eliminate and reverse heat damage and associated inflamation (but no longer than 10-15 minutes). Hot tubs are avoided for 7 days after an Iron distance or 1/2 Iron distance race.

A hot bath relaxes tensed muscles and improves circulation around musculature to speed healing, remove metabolic toxins and alleviate pain caused by muscle tension/strain. As heat damage is probably not an issue for you, I'd go with the hot bath and leg drains (propping your feet up on a wall at a 90 degree angle for 10 minutes-- squeeze from the ankles down to get fresh blood circulating into the muscles and metabolic toxins out.

-- or better yet, get to a swimming pool and swim easily (freestyle) for 20-30 minutes. In either case (Track meet or triathlon), swimming helps speed the healing process -- its called ACTIVE RECOVERY.

Had a massage a couple weeks ago and my nexk and shoulders have been sore ever since. The question I have is?

Eggplant

what does it mean when you have a burning sensation in your shoulders and what can be done naturally, and without spending more money, to remedy it?

Answer
Eggplant-
It is very common, after a masseur (person who does the massage) has used too much pressure. That is undoubtedly why you are feeling the pain in your sore shoulders. It will heal in time. Meanwhile you could find some way to apply warm heat to your back (maybe with a heating pad or hot water bottle or warm shower or tub bath) for about 20 minutes 2-3 times a day. If you have another person available who could do some GENTLE massage after the heat treatment, that might help. Good luck. Be patient. It will get better.

What should I put on a new tattoo?

Lindsey T

I just got a new tattoo and the tattoo person said to put A&D ointment or triple antibotic ointment on it. He didnt say how long or what to put on it afterwards. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hey there,

It is only necessary to apply ointment twice a day. Once in the morning and then again at night. If you prefer, you can also use a specialty product such as Tattoo Goo or H2Ocean. It's not necessary, as many over the counter products work just fine, but it's your choice.

A&D ointment, Bacitracin, Desitin Clear or a similar antibacterial ointment is acceptable, and works really well.

You should be using the products as directed and continue for 3-5 days. After that, continue to keep it clean, but you can use lotion when needed instead of ointment, to keep the skin soft. Whatever lotion you use, it should be dye and fragrance free. A lot of artists recommend Lubriderm, but I have found that Lubriderm stings when I apply it. Instead, I have had great success with Eucerin. This will vary with everyone. Just make sure that it's dye and fragrance free, that's the most important thing to remember with choosing a lotion to maintain your tattoo.

Just a few reminders, make sure you are washing your tattoo 2-3 times a day. You can use your clean hands to wash your tattoo with luke warm water and antibacterial soap or antimicrobial soap. Dial tends to be too harsh, generic brand antibacterial soaps are actually better. Gently wash away any ointment, blood and/or plasma and to completely clean the area. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Your hand is your best tool in this case. (If your tattoo feels slimy and slippery, you have probably been oozing plasma. Try to gently remove as much of this as possible - when the plasma dries on the skin surface, it creates scabs.)

Also, you can (and should!) shower with a new tattoo. It's OK to get your tattoo wet - just don't soak it. Submerging your tattoo in a bath or hot tub can cause serious damage, so you'll want to avoid those for 2-3 weeks, but showering is perfectly fine as long as you don't saturate your tattoo. If you get soap or shampoo on your tattoo, just remove it quickly with water. Swimming - whether it be a pool, fresh water or salt water - should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.

After a few days, you will notice some peeling and possibly a little scabbing. Excessive scabbing could indicate a poorly-done tattoo, but a little is sometimes normal and there is no need to panic. Apply warm moist compresses to the scabs for about 5 minutes 2-3 times a day to soften them and they will eventually come off on their own. (Do not apply ointment or lotion to a softened scab - wait for it to dry) You will also start to itch, just like a sunburn when it begins to heal. The advice here is, don't pick, and don't scratch! If the skin itches, slap it. If it is peeling, put lotion on it. And if it is scabbing, just leave it alone. Your tattoo is almost healed, and now is not the time to ruin it!

After your tattoo is healed, from now on, you will always want to protect it from the sun's ultraviolet rays. These can fade and damage a brilliant tattoo very fast. Before spending a lot of time in excessive heat, protect your tattoo with a minimum 30SPF sunblock. This will keep your tattoo vibrant for many years, and it will continue to be a source of great pride.

I know I rambled on a bit, but hopefully this helps you out some. All the best, and good luck! :-)

does moderate resorts at disneyworld have hot tubs anyone who knows that would be great?

Q.

Answer
It's true that most moderate resorts have hot tubs adjacent to the pool area. If you want a more private, relaxing experience, check out the suites at Saratoga Springs or the Boardwalk, which are deluxe resorts. Those rooms have large, jacuzzi bath tubs which are great to lounge around in. Saratoga Springs also offers spa services. You can chill out in the hot tub and suana, and use the fitness center too.

Need an ALL INCLUSIVE resort with a PRIVATE POOL/HOT TUB?

Mo Mos

im not rich but just want my privacy. need it to be in the Caribbean with some white sand beaches. a private pool/hot tub is a must though. This is my Honey Moon!!

Answer
Be prepared to pay a premium for that privacy....

There may be a few resorts that would have a private pool/hot tub, but not many. You may want to talk to a travel agent to help you find one.

What could be done to get more girls and women into naturism?

Dario W

This is an almost age-old question that the naturist and nudist movement in many countries has been trying to figure out. European places don't seem to have any problems attracting female clientele, but what could be done in English speaking countries like America, UK and Australia to get the women interested? Should naturist resorts and clubs offer things like personalised services, discounted drinks and entry like most nightclubs and textile holiday resorts do?

Answer
It's a tough thing to do. Positive messages and advertisements from Nudist Clubs still only attract a few new women every year. Most women get into nudism because of their male counterpart. It is a rare thing to see women, especially younger women, at nude beaches and clubs by themselves unless they have prior experience or visits there and are already comfortable.

Strangely enough, one place I visited a few times this past summer did have a lot of women. In fact, one day there were more women than men. Now, most of these women were older and had been nudists for quite some time, so take that for what it's worth.

Contrary to another answer, nudist clubs and resorts can offer whatever incentive they want and make their own rules about who pays what. You can't discriminate who goes to a public nude beach, but a club can do pretty much whatever it wants. It's a private entity. It can set whatever membership standards and prices it wants.

Clubs need to offer more things for young people to do, not just for women, but for guys too. Horseshoes and Shuffleboard aren't exactly my favorite things either. However, most nudist clubs are strapped for cash, except some in California and Florida that are able to operate year round. They try to keep admission costs low, but then have to sacrifice on amenities. Many young people claim the cost of nudist clubs are too high already. To be honest, I agree to a certain point, but many of these same people will easily spend $60 a night drinking at a nightclub and think $30 is too high of a price to pay for a day fee at a nudist club.

Most US clubs are more like campgrounds. Personalized services, nightclubs, and discounted drinks wouldn't really work. There are a few places it might work, but a lot of US clubs are mom and pop operations with rustic camping and a hot tub you pray actually is in working order.

Then there's the whole self-conscious thing most women have. Most women think they have to look like models to be a nudist. That's poor thinking. The fact that a lot of women in the sexual services field are now posting their profiles on nudist oriented websites also does not help the cause. Since Nudist Clubhouse and Skinbook have come out, the amount of women making profiles for adult services has greatly increased and it sends a very bad message to women who would legitimately want to try nudism.

Ladies...if this is something you think you want to try, then find a small nudist club, go for a visit, keep your clothes on if you want, and meet some nice people. Most private clubs will waive or severely discount 1st time visit fees, and nudity is rarely mandatory for 1st timers.

Any tips or tricks on how to save money with a young family?

Q. Hey everyone,

Can anyone share any tips on saving money when you have kids. Aimee is only 17months but our shopping and bills and things are so expensive so wondering if anyone had any money saving tips?

Answer
I swear by my extra freezer - I got it cheap off ebay and it now lives in our garage. Now I can buy food that's on offer and stock up. I also cook batches of soups and sauces to freeze, much cheaper than the store bought stuff and nicer too. I can buy large packs of meat from Costco and seperate it all into bags for the freezer.
Try to cut down on your food waste, use tupperware tubs to keep leftovers as fresh as you can until using them, try to keep fruit in the fridge in this hot weather so that it lasts longer. Shop sensibly, remember that shops put the stuff they really want to sell the most (with the highest profit margin) at eye level, so learn to look around for better value products. Consider some more shop brand products, try various ones to find out what you like. Use the vouchers that you find for money off - cut them out and put them in your bag/purse when you see them so you don't get to the checkout then suddenly realise that you left them at home (i do that frequently...) Try loyalty schemes like Tesco clubcard, nectar points, Boots advantage card. Remember that Boots have a booth just inside every store that will offer you new deals every time you shop - pop your card in every time you visit the store to see what they have - their advantage card is actually the most value when you use it well.
Would you be interested in trying cloth nappies? I use them now after never trying them with my first baby and I'm hooked. Aside from the environmental benefits, they're also better for baby's skin and I've saved a LOT of money. I understand that Aimee's a bit older now so you don't want to splash out for ones that you won't use for long - you could always try this site...
https://www.usednappies.co.uk/members_area.php

You can buy used cloth nappies there for a fraction of the price - boil wash them if you're concerned about hygiene, then as long as they're kept in good condition, you can re-sell for as much as you spent.
(adding as I go along, lol)
Remember to switch off all electrical appliances when you're not using them. Try to cut down how much you do use by drying clothes on a clothes line instead of a tumble drier, switch off lights during the day, turn off the tv for some puzzles or story time instead.
Find cheaper days out - kids are delighted with the park or a good garden. Invite friends round for kids' play time and swap turns at each other's houses. Buy kids clothes in the end of season sales - remembering what age group to buy for next summer so that at the start of next summer, you don't have to spend a fortune on clothes they'll be selling for half the price in a few weeks. If you watch a lot of films, try a cheap dvd rental rather than buying new ones (Tesco rental is quite good). If you go to the cinema, Orange wednesday is really good and while technically you have to be an Orange customer, you can just ask someone who's with orange and not using it that day to get the discount code for you, then you use it at the cinema.
See if you can save money on energy by switching companies. try uswitch.com, they'll find the best deal for you and it is quick and easy (i should know, I've switched several times!). Energy companies are constantly changing their prices and offering new deals, it's best to keep an eye out for where you can save.
Review your driving, are you over-reving and wasting fuel? Think about how to drive the economical way. Try to use your air con as little as you can, that's a real drain on the tank! Did you know that petrol stations change their prices through the week? Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest days to fill up. Look for deals on petrol - such as Tesco offering 5p off a litre when you spend more then £50 in store (every now and then). I'v found Asda to have the cheapest fuel in our area.
Wash your own car rather than pay for it - get Aimee in her messy clothes and give her a cloth, it's actually really good fun for kids! My 3 year old soaked herself on Saturday this way and she had a great time.
Also, try these sites for great tips on how to save money;
http://www.frugal.org.uk/index.html
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/
ETA - Just found this;
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/orange-wednesday#free
You can get a free orange sim card with £5 top up and use it for orange wednesday! I'm going to do that now...

Will a hot tub stay hot when it's really cold outside?

Q. I want to visit a cabin this winter, but I'm sure the temperatures will be going below zero F. The hot tub is just outside the cabin on the porch. But I'm wondering -- with the air temperature being that cold, will the tub be able to retain the heat?
My apologies for the redundant questions. Oddly enough, Chrome wasn't doing anything after I clicked Submit.

Answer
I have an outdoor 380 gallon hot tub and the answer is definitely yes, but it gets to be expensive because the heating coil is always running. I've used my hot tub in freezing temperatures, with snow on the ground and the water remains at whatever temperature I've set it for, usually 101 degrees. I suppose, in theory, there's an outdoor temperature so cold that it would overwhelm the heating capacity but I've never seen that happen. Also, better to keep the insulated cover on until right before you get in, to help retain heat. In the winter, plan on spending about $150/month in electricity to keep it running. And remember, you have to leave it on as long as its full of water or the pipes would freeze. The hot tub system is self-contained, not connected to any hot water pipes from the house so you can never turn it off unless it's been completely drained.

How do I get dirt &sand out of the bottom of a 18 by 4ft metal frame above ground pool from walmart ?

Q. the pool cleaner it came with doesnt work....bought a pool shark autocleaner & the pump isnt strong enough to move it...help!!! I am tired of having a dirty pool floor.

Answer
They sell a cheap suction/vacuum at hot tub stores. It is made of pvc pipe and you attach it to a garden hose and put a nylon on the end of it, turn on the hose and it sucks up all the crap in the bottom of a pool and collects it in the nylon. It works really well.

How do you throw an awesome back to school party?

tay tay

Okay here are the deets:
*I am 14
*There will be around 15-20 of my friends
*It's going to be at my house outside
*Very casual-pizza, snacks, music, etc.
*In August {from like 4-7 (around that time)}
OK...so what I need help with is to not make this party lame.. I am on a low budget..i need help with
*what other things to do than dance and talk
*Decorations or a cheap theme
*HOW NOT TO MAKE THIS "GET TOGETHER" LAME!
*and anything else!
Thank you so so so much! the person who gives me the best and/or most ideas will get the ten points! thank you!! â¥
I want to hae a party ok? and there will be both girls and guys so
OK ok ik ok so lets call it end of summer...the last attempt to have fun

Answer
Change your attitude about things!! I know it sounds cheesy, but It seriously worked for me lol. It's a good start calling it "End of Summer" party :). Now, ask us, "How can I throw and AWESOME get together?" Instead of how to make it NOT lame. lol.

It helps a lot.

Ok, now. I went to a party yesterday and I'll tell you what made it super fun!

1. Water Games. Like sprinklers, water balloons, that kind of stuff.

2. Hot tub, or a decent sized above ground pool (The hot tub was SO fun for heating up after a bunch of COLD COLD COLD water games haha)

3. Try to have the party around sunny parts of the day if you're doing water games. But hot tubs you can use any time.

4. Make sure everyone is included. Talk to everyone. Act casual. Remember, these people are your FRIENDS, right?? Hug them. Bump into them with your hips, tickle them, talk to them!

5. When outside, try to have lights set up. it really sets the mood any everything. Tell scary stories.. make smores maybe!!

6. BE CREATIVE!

7. Since this is a casual party, keep it short. 3 hours is a good mark. My friend had her party 5 hours long and towards the end people started getting bored.. You want it to end on a good note!

8. 15-20 People is a lot more than you think. And If your party doesn't have a lot planned, it can get crazy and really hard to keep track of everyone.(I speak from experience) Consider having less people.

Help with a cal spa hot tub?

Q. I recently moved, and in the backyard there is a cal spa hot tub, but I cannot seem to find the model name. I found some other markings that maybe you can help me with (don't tell me to google it, I've spent all day looking)"cal spa s dup 99" a serial # on the outside, which is "8915" and a serial # inside a screw-off panel to get to the main circuit "52199-0120010728005." Thanks in advance.

Answer
You really don't need the model and serial number unless you trying to order parts from the manufacturer, and then again you really don't need that because each part should have its own individual number. Any good spa tech should know how to locate parts for you. Or you couls always call Cal Spas themselves and see if those numbers mean anything to them.

Any other questions give me a buzz

I have a cal spa hot tub that needs parts I have the serial number but how do I figure out what model it is?

Answer
call Cal Spa and they will tell you from your serial #.

Can anyone recommend any specific eastern Caribbean cruise destinations & cruise lines?

TC

My wife & I have never taken a cruise, and we're looking to take one next spring sometime. She's wanting to go to the Virgin Islands and some other eastern Caribbean destinations. Anyone have any suggestions on a particular destination and/or specific cruise line?

Answer
I have been on about 20 cruises with five different cruise lines and cruised all of the Caribbean routes and Mexico. Here's what I recommend based on my experiences.

There are two factors to consider when planning a cruise (1) what activities are on ship and the demographics of the other passengers, and (2) what port stops will be made that I will enjoy.

I have been on Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity and Princess. All of these are good cruise lines. Royal Caribbean cruise line has some of the best on board activities including on various ships, ice skating or roller blading, mini-golf, table tennis, rock climbing wall, basketball court and on the new Freedom class ships, Liberty, Freedom and Independence of the Seas the flowrider where you can body surf right on ship. There are always pools and hot tubs and many ship have a Solarium (a cover area) with a pool and hot tubs for adults only. This is in addition to the regular pool and hot tubs for everyone. Some ships have water slides.

All of these lines have ships have great gymnasiums with a variety of equipment. The RC's Freedom and Liberty have THE best gyms I have ever seen on ships.

You did not say where you live but you can cruise to the Caribbean from as far north as NY City. And, the Caribbean gives you many more options for itineraries, for departure ports (cruises go to the Caribbean from as far north as NY City and then all over Florida, plus New Orleans, Houston (Galveston) Texas, and Mobile, Alabama. So the Caribbean offers many more departure ports, ships, dates and options. And, for example if you want to go on the cruise lines newer ships your best bet is to go Caribbean out of Port Canaveral, Ft Lauderdale, or Miami, Florida.

The main things that you want to do is book very early and by that I mean 9 to 12 months or more in advance so that you can get the best price. All you need is a $250 to $300 deposit per person to book and hold your reservation and then you just pay it in full by 70 days beforfe the cruise. Also in the Caribbean you want to try to stay away from the hurricane season which in June through the end of October. Secondly, look for the specials that will be listed on each cruise line's web site. Let that help determine when and where to go.

There are really three basic types of itineraries for the Caribbean. Western Caribbean cruises typically go to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and a private cruise line island. If you go to Cozumel there is the opportunity to buy a tour to see Mayan ruins, if that's your interest. Its considered the best place to go for scuba and snorkeling. If you go to Jamaica the two main attractions are a river raft float trip (not rapids) and the Dunn's River Falls climb. If you go to Grand Cayman you will likely want to go to 7-Mile Beach or do a swim with the dolphins/stingrays tour.

Cruises to the Eastern Caribbean typically go to St Thomas, St Maarten, a private cruise line island and maybe another island like Tortola or Puerto Rico. If you want to do a lot of shopping then pick a cruise with St Thomas as one of the port stops. St Maarten is also mainly a beach and shopping stop.

Most Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises have a private island stop where the ship takes food ashore for an all day beach party with games and entertainment. All of the cruise lines have what they call their private island and you can have a great day on these islands; only ship's people on them for the day. Royal Caribbean has THE best private island I have ever been to at Labadee, Haiti. Its a huge place that has multiple beaches and many activities. RC's ships the Freedom and The Liberty which do both the Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries both have stops at Labadee.

The Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries typically start in Puerto Rico and go either to Aruba, Curacao, and St Thomas and St Maarten, OR they go to the southern Caribbean islands like Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, St Lucia and maybe St Thomas and/or St Maarten. For the most part these latter islands are very much alike but nice to see. The main difference between these two Southern Caribbean itineraries, aside from the different islands, is the Aruba cruise has two "at sea" days with no port stops, while the other has a port stop about each day.

My favorite cruise line is Royal Caribbean but you cannot go wrong with Celebrity, Princess or Holland America. If you are looking for a real budget cruise and a party ship go on Carnival. If you want to basically be informal the whole cruise go on Norwegian. Finally, while you are looking at cruises pay attention to the ship and when it was launched. The best cruises will be on the newer ship, those launched about 2000 or later. That's my experienced opinion and advice.

If all of this does not answer your questions just go to a travel agent, like an AAA or American Express office, and they will answer your questions and help you book at no cost

What cruise line is best and would I want to cruise the eastern, western or southern Caribbean. And when?

GARY M

This would be a first time cruise for us. Where and when should we go and on what ship.

Answer
I have been on about 20 cruises with four different cruise lines and here's what I recommend based on my experiences.

There are two factors to consider when planning a cruise (1) what activities are on ship, and (2) what port stops will be made that I will enjoy.

I have been on Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Princess. Some ships have water slides.

All of these lines have ships have great gymnasiums with a variety of equipment. The RC's Freedom and Liberty have THE best gyms I have ever seen on ships.

The cruise director will organize games and activities around the pool, especially on "at sea" days when there is no port stop. They may also have a midnight party on the pool deck with a buffet, music and dancing one night. Each night there will be a show and it is usually run twice so that no matter what time you go to dinner you can see the show. If you go on the Royal Caribbean ships with the ice skating rink they will have a free ice show that is fabulous.

If you are a gambler there will be a casino, except on Disney ships. Each day you will receive a "newsletter" type flier in your cabin that details the time and location of all of the activities on ship the next day. So you will know what is happening and where. Also, most ships will have a channel on the TV in the room that recaps activities for the current and next day. If there is a port stop the next day most ships will have a presentation in the show room or a lounge that talks about where to shop; then this is repeated on TV.

Most ships these day have 2,000 to 4,000 passengers so things on ship are very well organized and in most cases the ship does not even feel crowded.

When you select a cruise consider that those going to the Caribbean will feature a lot of beach time and water sports related activities like snorkel, jet ski, para-sailing, or just swimming and relaxing on a beach. If you go to Jamaica the two main attractions are a river raft float trip (not rapids) and the Dunn's River Falls climb. If you go to Grand Cayman you will likely want to go to 7-Mile Beach ( a short taxi/mini-van ride ($4-$5 per person each way), or do a swim with the dolphins/stingrays tour.

WEEKEND AWAY IN THE UK WITH PRIVATE HOT TUB?

Shannon

I'm looking to take my boyfriend away for a night (Saturday) in march 2013 and can't find a hotel with a PRIVATE hot tub/spa bath something a long those lines in the UK. We live in the West Midlands, Shropshire so would be looking for something in, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, possibly London. Does anyone know anything that would be a possibility, preferably quite cheap too - around £150. Thanks.

Answer
Why are you asking on Maintenance and Repairs?

Get online and look for vacation rentals. All you'll get here is suggestions what to do when the hot tub stops working.

It would be cheaper I would think to have the motor replaced and pump resealed. You might call a local electric shop that deals in motors sales and service. You might have to take to them to see if they can rebuild it. Thats the way I would go first.

Has anyone used Magic ReNew to refinish porcelain sink/tub?

dr521

I bought this product to resurface a porcelain sink in my kitchen. It was recommended at a local HomeDepot. After spending a couple of hours following the instructions to clean and prep the surface and "transferring" the coating agent from a "hot" can to a "cold" can, the darn can won't spray! I'm not sure whether I got any coating agent from the hot can to the can, as a cupful of the stuff oozed out in the transfer process. Anyone have any idea what's going on? God, a terrible product. It wasn't cheap, either. And all the time I wasted...
Scubadiver,
I carefully followed the instructions. I even used a thermostat to mesasure the hot water temperature. When I tried to transfer the stuff from hot to cold, I didn't hear a hissing sound, unless I slightly tilted the hot can to one side. I guess that is when the stuff oozed out into the bag, and not the cold can. I repeatedly warmed the hot can, shook it, and tried the transfer process, but to no avail. The funny thing is, the product claims that you can finish the project over a weekend, and gives you a toll-free number, but they accept calls only on weekdays (and only during normal business hours EST; I'm in California)... And the URL they give you doesn't provide any info on Magic ReNew... I got my money back from Home Depot, but I'm upset for all the time I wasted...
I wonder how much it would cost to have the sink professionally reglazed?

Answer
take it back you were miss lead by an inexperienced sales associate which is what depot and Lowe's is hiring. first of all it cannot be done and if it could it would cost more than sink is worth. why, when sink was new and no finish, they got it red hot then applied powdered porcelain thus melting leaving a glassy finish. if it was fiberglass different story also today's cleaners etch this type of finish and that is why i like a heavy gauge stainless steel sink

What is best & cheap Las Vegas spa package?

My wife and I are going to Las Vegas in November. We would like to get a inexpensive but quality priced massage spa package. I will have a car, so I can go off strip.

Answer
Hard Rock Spa. Get there early, they have a hot tub, go naked flaunt your stuff. The hot tubs are men and women separate. I love going to get a massage and enjoying taking a shower and getting ready to go out for the night! I think I paid $80 for an hour? Look it up. It was the best massage I had ever had.

Nice and Cheap Hotels in Las Vegas?

Tencia B

Hi, I am going to Vegas in August. I hear Circus Circus in nasty now. Do you know of any nice/cheap hotels in vegas?

Answer
I recommend staying on the strip so you have easy access to everything. Excalibur is great. It's a low cost hotel (from $51/night) and it is a castle/medieval theme, and it is in a GREAT location. We always stay there because of the combination of it's price and convenience. It's an easy walk to any of the major hotels and it has some good restaurants. They also just renovated their pool, so there are four pools now, like 5 hot tubs, and waterslides. Check for their promo codes along with the other hotels at

Good Luck! You'll love it there!

Hot Tub dangers during pregnancy?

what?

I am 7 weeks pregnant. I got in the a hot tub for about 15 min, but I did not put my whole body inside, just my lower body, and I had on a wet shirt. I was warm, but not uncormfortable. Is that dangerous?

Answer
I have a hot tub. My Dr. said it's okay as long as the temp isn't above 99 degrees and I don't stay in any longer than 1 cycle (15 minutes). I am 23 weeks pregnant. Good luck!

hottub, during pregnancy?

Michila No

I have done some research on can pregnant women get into hot tubs. and some web sites say yes, and some say no. what is it really? can you get in the hot tub? or cant you? but then i heard from someone who i live by that last year with her pregnancy she got in the hot tub but kept the temp. down by like 90 or lower. and she said everything turned out fine and it really helped with her muscels and back n all. help!
i will add something here. Im 38 almost 39 weeks pregnant

Answer
I would stay away from hot tubs, especially while I was pregnant (I'm 8 weeks)
If you feel the need to relax, which I know you do when pregnant, try having a warm bath instead. Light a candle, put on your favourite Cd, turn the phone off, and just relax. The good thing is you won't end up smelling like all those chemicals in the hot tub water and you don't have to feel fat trying to fit into a bathing suit.
Take the time now for yourself because once baby comes, I don't think it will be something we can ever expect to imagine again!!!

Ongoing Hot Tub electrical saga?

Salami and

Ok folks. Thanks all for the previous advice you've given.
I spoke to the city inspector. He said that I could do it myself providing I passed a test, then he would come to inspect the work.

Considering I just got a $1500 !!!! quote for the work, I think this will be the way to go. (I priced out the stuff at HD (under $250))

Can someone post or point me to the NEC regulations pertaining to 240V outdoor hot tub wiring?

Thanks!

Answer
Looking briefly at your other questions I'm don't think it is good for you to do yourself. Is $1500 really worth saving if it puts your life at risk? Outdoor hot tubs follow all the same rules as pools, and it is article 680 of the NEC. Even experienced electricians have questions on pools, so I really doubt someone inexperienced can do it properly. You can read the NEC online at nfpa.org (not a PDF, no searching, but it is free). Go to the link below and click on the preview option.

Skin resistance goes way down when wet and there is a much bigger shock risk. You probably won't know what you mess up until it is too late. You can't depend on an inspection to find everything.

I also want to say you don't have a complete material list. I doubt you can get the stuff for $250 if a complete job is $1500. Or if it is the case, you should get more bids.

Cost for hot tub installation / pad?

curious

About how much does it cost for a 6-8 person salt water hot tub in Tacoma, Wa? (Cost of tub, concrete slab, ect.)

Answer
The cost is about $5-7,000. Assuming you already have easy access to outdoor water/plumbing. But a salt-water hot tub? Never heard of that. But the proof of the pudding is in calling 3 or 4 dealers in that product and get their prices, installed. You may also attend a Home & Garden Show, where such dealers proliferate.

ive inherited a 13 year old hot tub perfect condition. I cant seem to find a "filter" persay.?

miss_click

My Dads passed away and Id like to keep this hot tub as pristeen as it is now. I cant find info for older hot tubs and proper maintence.. everything i do read tho stresses the importance of filters and changing them.. i cant find where 1 would /should go on this tub. Its the kind that has the wood skirt around it. Seats like 6 or 8.. i think the tub is 8x8 . At the bottom of the inside there is like a mesh round thing where the water gets circulated from, its a small wire mesh kinda cage. But thats about it, it catches leaves and such but not small debris like an accordian paper kind of filter would.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Ive looked all over this tub. There is a skimmer basket thing that you access on top of the tub, where leaves go in from the side thru the lil door thing (i know, im being techinical now) but that water in the skimmer basket goes no where. IM at a loss !!

help!

Answer
The skimmer basket thing is the filter. There is probably a screw cap on top of it or someway to get the top off and then the filter is inside the plastic cage thingy. Pull that off and you will find the filter. Make sure you find it and keep it clean, cuz that is the most important part of a spa. That water going to the skimmer basket is going somewhere. Make sure the spa is in pump mode to make the pump pull the water through and work properly.

What would be the best solution to build a deck or patio? More details inside!?

Jaylyn

We are considering buying a hot tub! In order to get it, we need to build a level patio or deck to place it on! We want to go the cheapest route possible, but also want it to look good and last long! The area we want the deck/patio is 12 feet by 9 feet (may do 12x12, depending on price difference)! Keep in mind there will be a lot of weight on it!

Would we be better off with treated wood? Do we actually need to cement posts in the ground and build a deck on that, or would we be ok with a wood frame directly on the ground and building on that?

What about pouring cement or bricks or cement blocks? Keep in mind we will be doing this ourselves and aren't the best of handpersons, but we can do basic work.

So based on lower cost and average skill what would be the best route? Any details would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
One more thought too, with concrete, how thick should we make it?

Answer
If building with wood try sticking to modular lengths like 12x8 or 12x12 or 8x8 if possible, if you use dimensions like 9' that aren't normally stocked in lumber yards or your local home depot you will waste a lot of wood and money buying 2x12's to cut 3' off to make 9' lengths. If you can do 12x8 that will be cheaper anyways.

YES you should definitely pour footings, or you could put posts into the gound and once you get the deck built and square and level pour concrete into the oversize holes your posts are sitting in. Either way you want treated wood to resist rot from moisture cycles. You could try getting non treated wood and painting it, but after time the paint wears and the wood rots anyways.

If you are pouring concrete you want to lay a gravel base down (preferably 3 to 4" thick) and then pour the concrete slab (4" would work) on top of that. You have to reinforce the concrete either with reinforcing bar or with wire mesh and both should be locally available at your hardware store.

Your hardware store will also carry how to book that are worth their price. As for cost, if you do it the right way, a wood deck will look great and be easier to build. The concrete may be cheaper but if you have to rent heavy equipment or have a truck come out it may be more expensive. It depends on the method and how correctly you do it.
