Question about "chinese" people and.. hot baths?

OK, so I dont't know if the people are in fact chinses but they might be? rofl. So:
You know how in anime or movies or something where the entire family takes a bath i guess, in like a really big tub (usually looks like its made of wood).. Sorry I really know nothing about this lol. so any ways.
Is it the whole family? are those types of baths common in china or somewhere?
Is it like just guys with guys and girls with girls in the bath... or... it just seemed like such a nonchalant thing... taking a bath witht he rest of your family rofl. are you completely naked? whats the point? just to talk with people?

Sorry lol, just found it intresting, ust wanted to see if any one knew anything about this. thanks for any help you can give me ^_^

You are talking about the Japanese bathing tradition in an "onsen" from a warm water spring or a simpler indoor affair called a "sentÅ." The object is purely recreational â people wash themselves before entering. Outdoor onsen can be quite beautiful with care taken to create as natural an environment as possible. Japanese value these baths quite highly and enjoy socializing (including doing business) in such a relaxed atmosphere. Think of a hot tub, but with a far longer tradition and not some tiny thing made of fiberglass. The Japanese call this "naked communion" (裸ã®ä»ãåã hadaka no tsukiai). And yes, unless it's part of a kind of waterpark, no one wears a bathing suit, but may keep a washcloth over their genitals as a token covering, whether in mixed or single-sex environments.

The older tradition was "Everybody in the pool!", but single-sex has become more common in the last 60 years or so, though some establishments may have a mixed onsen and then a separate one for women. Small children can go anywhere.

Some establishments or hotels might have smaller onsen which can be used by any configuration of people (think "jacuzzi suite" hotel). Google "onsen hotel" for some lovely pictures.

Attitudes toward nudity in public, whether single-sex or mixed, are culturally conditioned. Northern and Central Europeans have adopted the Finnish sauna tradition, and public establishments, even in very conservative Catholic countries like Poland and Slovakia, will have facilities or times reserved for mixed, single-sex, and perhaps families. And then, of course, there are nude beached throughout the world.
