Why is my hot tub shorting out?

psyclone

Bought a used hot tub. installed it at our home to a 220 system where the old dryer used to be. when the hot tub clicks on maually or on timer you can hear the pump turn over and then it trips the reset on the hot tub. apparently there is a short somewhere in the hot tub system. looking for any idea on what could be causing this short or this problem. Thank you!
It is tripping a breaker within the hot tub unit itself. not from the box connected to my house.

Answer
The "reset in the hot tub"???
If you are referring to the gfi tripping,
make sure the ground is hooked up properly.
A standard 3 wire, dryer outlet will not have enough conductors
to support the GFCI protected hot tub. (if the unit is so equipped)
If the motor makes a bump and trips the control panel breaker or
30 amp dryer breaker, it sounds like you have a obstruction
or a bad circulating pump motor.
If it runs for a instant and trips the 30 amp. 240 volt breaker
feeding the dryer outlet, the circuit is overloaded.
Most hot tubs (stand alone units with heater and auto pumps)
rum on a 50 or 60 amp 240 volt circuit.
Make sure all of your connections are good and tight.
Loose wire connections cause
voltage drop (ups the amps), heat (tripping & melted wire) and fires.

Electrical to my hot tub.?

I am trying to wire up my hot tub (220) and need to know how to wire up my 50 amp GFI in the exterior breaker box. Thank you.

Answer
Hots from the panel into the bus lugs, hots going to the tub to breaker lugs.

White from panel to a bus bar isolated from ground (don't install the green bond screw), with the white curly wire from the breaker to this bar also. The white to the tub on the GFCI breaker.

Grounds to a separate grounded bus bar or ground lug or ground screw.
