My hot tub won't heat?

Roxanne

Ok, now I am sure no one has a clue what I am about to talk about since it is such an obscure model, but I have a Hot Springs Soveriegn Model I hot tub. Everything works on it, jets, pumps, lights, but the heater won't work. According to the owner's manual, it says that if everything but the heater is working, then the heater probably tripped and to just push the red button on top of the thermal cut off to reset it. So I cracked open the control section, located the heater and thermal cut off, etc.... NO RED BUTTON! I looked online, found that some other people had this problem, but some people found it. I emailed the manufacturer, and they gave me the "pass the buck" answer and told me to buy a new heater. I tried to explain that their owner's manual was wrong and I wanted to try the "reset" before throwing $300 for a new heater, but I didn't get much help after that. Anyway... Anybody know any other way to check out the heater?

Thanks!

Hello. Your Hotsprings Hot Tub was their number one best seller. What I really need to know is the year of it. The really old ones will havea red tip button that is a hight-limit reset button, located on the spa pack. If it is newer and your heater has a tube that is looped and a small black rectangular box attached to it then you need to feel for a small round rubber place on that that you can depress with your finger. Depending on your model your heater night not be this newest style and your in trouble then. The most common reason it is not heating is one of the two sensors are bad on that heater. They simply screw in. And are really cheap to buy (20-30). Replace the temp sensor first. Now if neither sensor is bad...it is your heater and I have to tell you that Their heaters are notorious for needing replacing every few years. The one other thing you need to make sure of is that your small little circ pump is indeed working since they also break often. Next if you have a new IQ2020 pack. Remove the cover with the electric off and look at the board on the left and you may need to even remove it to examine the back of the board. These boards have relays that burn. It's the most common heater problem I find with a Hot Springs Tub.

why is my hot tub overheating?

Answer
There are three common reasons:

a) Improperly set thermostat - check that first. Make sure that it is set at the correct level. Older spas with rheostat-type thermostats often drift, so you may have to work the dial a little.

b) Failed thermostat - older mechanical thermostats can fuse in the closed position, driving the heater to run full-time until its internal thermal-fuse melts (thereby scrapping the heater).

c) Failed heater relay - again, these relays carry a lot of current and can fuse in the closed position.

Try shutting the system down and allowing the tub to cool - several hours at least. Then re-start it and see if it is still in a runaway condition. Electronic controls will reboot and/or reset if it is not a failed part - so this may cure the problem. Otherwise:

In may cases, mechanical controls age out to the point of unreliability. If your spa control is more than 10 - 15 years old and of that nature you are due to replace it in any case. All-eletronic controls may have a mother-board failure or relay failure - and you would need a professional to diagnose that problem. Unless you know _exactly_ what you are doing, call a pro. Electricity and water are nothing to mess with - even when ground-faulted.

Good luck with it.
