Do they work better than others (water based)? What are pros and cons? Any irritation or other problems? Do they really last longer? Etc...

Yes..! They work and very well too and remain "slippery" for a long, long time. We use it in the hot tub and pool here in Tucson, Arid Zona and the natural lubes woman produce, as well as the water based ones, just don't last long in these conditions.....
Another very good silicone lube is called - Gun Oil - and it's 100% pure liquid silicone and is good for any part of the body to allow slipping' & sliding' of body parts. And yes, it can be used as a regular lubricant too on tools, guns and what not. The Army has used it in the sands of Iraq on their M-16's....
Very few people have a reaction to silicone based lubes. Even deep in vagina's or butts it harmless and inert. However, it don't taste too good, takes a while to wash away and it leaves the floor and steps of hot tubs and some pools VERY slippery..!
Because of the property's of silicone lubes, any brand will be OK as long as you read the contents and make sure there is nothing else mixed with it, meaning even a container from Home Depot or Ace Hwd would work, and most likely be cheaper...
One down side is the effect silicone lube may have on some toys. It can ruin them. Make them fall apart, get mushy.. Be careful using these lubes around good toys.
