I'm thinking of using a plastic tub to home my BP- what size should I be looking at?

Marco

First of all, do you recommend using a plastic tub rather than a tank? I'm not worried about the money, they just seem really convenient. It would be in my room too, so I'm not so worried about it looking pretty. I was searching similar questions to mine on here, and a lot of people are saying don't use tubs, and eventually you'll have to use a tank anyway. Is that true? If so, I might as well just start with a tank!

Give me some input. How big should the tub be, how big should it be for him full grown and maybe attach a picture? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Bins are excellent and I prefer them over aquariums any day. They hold heat and humidity much better than a glass tank with a screen lid, plus they take up less room and are easier to clean. I use Sterilite bins in rack systems. You can buy them cheap at Walmart. Hatchlings are started out in 6 quart and quickly moved up to 12 quart. Adult males and smaller females can be kept in 28 quart bins and larger females in 41 quart bins. This is how I do it and many other breeders I know. Newspaper will work just fine as a substrate. Since they hold humidity well, a water dish will provide enough humidity, so I don't use any bedding like aspen or cypress mulch. Now, let me correct a few things "white_khorvett" said. The temperatures he/she mentioned are not the greatest. 95 degrees for a hot spot is a little too much. I use 90 and wouldn't recommend going over 92. And 70 degrees for a cool side temperature is way too low and will give your python a respiratory infection quick. I use an ambient temperature of 80 degrees. The following caresheet from New England Reptile Distributors says to never go below 75 degrees.

I have read you answer perfectly fine "white_khorvett", and I think your knowledge is minimal at best. Working at a rescue does not make you an expert, and neither does giving out poor information. Have you ever been to Africa? Ghana and Togo are the two countries with the highest populations of wild ball pythons and it does not get 115 degrees there ever. Despite being at the equator, their average summer temperatures are much lower than the average summer temperatures in the state of Texas. It stays in the low 80's there. So before you go making up information to make yourself look smarter than you actually are, you need to do some research because you aren't fooling anyone. You claim to work for the Mutual of Omaha, you claim to have seen a 19 foot male Burmese python (which does not exist), you think ball pythons and turtles can live together in the same enclosure, you think both green anoles and rough green snakes are tropical animals which couldn't be further from the truth since they are both found in the United States, you don't know what urates are, you have a 12 foot boa and have owned alligators and saltwater crocodiles, etc. etc. Personally, I think you're full of it! You're pretty bold to call yourself an educator. I think you're the one that needs to be educated.

Fun Vacations in the midwest?

Stephanie

I am looking for a fun vacation in the midwest like nebraska, iowa, kansas area. my family is looking for a fun gettaway. We are looking for something fun for the whole family from 2-50. Any tips would be great Thanks! PS...we really dont want to go to some cabin in the middle of nowhere and go hunting or anything like that haha :S

Answer
We just camped out last weekend at a KOA in Gretna, Nebraska. There were tons of fun things to do right there. Swimming pool, hot tub, mini golf, volleyball, tricycle rentals.
You can camp in a tent or RV or rent a cabin. There's a gift shop that delivers pizza right to the campsite. very cool. Theres a huge outlet mall nearby for shopping. I hear the Omaha zoo is really good.
Here in Kansas city we have Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, Science city kids museum and planetarium, The Great Wolf lodge, etc.
