Would you hot tub and then sauna or sauna and then hot tub?

Montus 'O'

I was talking to someone yesterday and they said that if you sauna and then hot tub, you are more likely to suffer from a heart attack, stroke, passing out and drowning, etc. Is this true? I have always sat in the sauna and then the hot tub and I have never had any problems. What do you think and why.

Answer
Sauna then Hot Tub is the way to go.

Saunas are shown to transfer heat less efficiently than hot tubs, so therefore your core body temperature rise is much less in a sauna than a hot tub.

Of course, it has been proven that hot tubs are more dangerous than saunas. In 1988 a medical examiner did a survey and found that nearly 7 times as many deaths occurred relating to hot tubs than saunas.

Make sure you're cooling down appropriately between sauna and hot tub sessions, and you're not over doing it in either one.

Keep in mind that in the studies, most of the people who died had used alcohol or drugs during their session, or had heart disease.

hot tubs????

Q. with my last two pregnancies, my doctor has told me im fine to go in hot tubs, as long as i dont stay in too long. im now seeing another doctor for my third, as i moved. he has just toldme im not allowed to go in hot tubs, never, not even for 5 minutes... why would he say this, but my other docs have told me its fine??? what are the risks if i were to go in for 5 min?

Answer
My personal decision was not to go in hot tubs during my first trimester. Once I was past that, I would go in lots (SOO relaxing), but I set the temp to no more then 100 and monitored myself carefully for when I felt I was overheating.

Your new doctor is probably just not taking any chances, because there's lots of dumb women out there who would go in a very hot tub and not take the precautions. He wouldn't want his tail on the line if something should go wrong. The risk is highest during a) your first trimester and b) if the hot tub actually raises your body temperature. Alot of doctors feel that hot tubs are fine because we women naturally feel uncomfortable when our temps get too high and get out of the tub.
I wouldn't worry about it. Like I said, I followed the 'rules' I set for myself for the two pregnancies we had a hot tub and all was perfectly fine. I SO loved going it it during labour too---very helpful!!
