Answer
First of all it has to be Ground Faulted either at the tub or in the panel. If you like running in your "Birthday Suit" to the panel if it trips then have it there, or under the tub. The wire must be #12-2 with ground a dedicated circuit and outlet a 20amp. You can do it if you have a little knowledge of wiring and feel comfortable about it.. Make sure the common ground (white wire) and the ground ( bare or green) are well tightened in the panel and the black on the breaker also. Make sure all screws are tight on the outlet also, This is the biggest cause of heating up and possible a fire. Have a few glasses for me and enjoy the tub. By the way, is this outside. If it is I would have the gfci close by

I am putting a sm. 3person hot tub(110 volt) on my deck--how to plug it in?-- its to go 12ft from house wall?

I can put a line under the deck but I'm afraid of water possibly running down the cord. I do not want to put it right up against the house as the view is much better further away.

Answer
The first thing you have to know is whether your tub requires a 15-amp or a 20-amp connection. If it requires a 20-amp connection, you will not be able to plug into your existing wall outlet, nor will you be able to tap into the exising outlet to add an outlet. This is because your existing outlet is probably rated for 15-amps only and you could create a fire hazard by doing so. If your tub is rated for 15-amps or less, you could plug into the existing outlet or tap into the existing outlet to add an outlet, but you may overload the circuit while the pump is running, causing the breaker to trip. Your best bet is to add a dedicated 120-volt, 20-amp circuit with #12 Romex to the deck. It doesn't take much to add it. Also, you shouldn't run cords under the deck because cords are meant to be used as temporary connections and this sounds like you are attempting to make this a permanent scenario.
