i have a solor cover from my pool that we no longer have, could we cut it to size and use that on our hot tub under the hard cover?
im willing to buy the right stuff, i was just asking a question. and im talking about the solar cover to lay on top of the water under the regular cover.
Answer
This wont work as a thermal hot tub blanket.
Heat travels through moist air much quicker than dry air and reducing the moisture between the water surface and your insulating cover will cut down greatly on heating costs....
Less evaporation = Lower heating costs
Chlorine, and to some extent bromine evaporate from the water, simply dissipating into the air and bleaching out the underside of your insulating cover (or eating away the underside of some covers)....
Less evaporation = Lower chemical costs
Most insulating covers eventually absorb water and get very heavy. Much of this water can come from the rising steam....
Less evaporation = Longer cover life

My husband is getting a bonus - pellet stove or hot tub?

hyr
My husband is getting a bonus at the end of the month.
He wants to get a fireplace pellet stove to heat our home (we already have gas forced air heat), but it will be used in the basement and make it nice and toasty.
I want to get a hot tub. We can use it all year and it's relaxing.
Which one should we get and why?
we live in MI. it's like 3 degrees today!
Answer
Well as someone who just bought a hot tub I can understand your point of view. After a week of temperatures in the 20s here in VA I decided I wanted to be warm (we have a heat pump and they don't work for #%@& when the temp falls below 30).
So we got a tub (Vita Reflections Seville). It cost $4800 - includes everything. That is only a low-mid priced spa. So depending on the size of his bonus a hot tub may be too much $$.
If you do get a tub make sure it has full-foam insulation. It will save you on energy costs.
Final analysis: Pellet stove will save you money in the long run. The hot tub will cost you money from the day you buy it, but it is something you might really enjoy.
