hot tub 6 gauge wire image

Jenn P
I have talked to many people who said that when they bought a hot tub it was not to hard to hook up and they were able to do it themselves but I just bought one and the manual says I HAVE to get a professional to hook it up but I really dont want to spend all that money. I have a bunch of friends that are very good handy man and would be able to hook it up if they had instructions. Is there anyway to hook up a hot tub without getting a professional? just incase the type of the hot tub matters..the manual says a licensed electrician should purchase and install an 50 AMP GFCI circuit breaker and it should be wired with 6-3 gauge wire (2 hots, a ground, and a neutral) for 220V....please help!! i don't have the money to get a professional but i really want to be able to use my hot tub.
Answer
You don't HAVE to do anything..If you or your friends understand electrical wiring enough go ahead and follow the instructions and do what they recommend,if not you should get a pro to do it,you don't want to electrocute anybody. If you can afford a hot tub you can afford an electrician..good luck

I need to install a gfi for my jacuzzi. There is a dual 50 amp breaker in the panel with 6-8 gauge wiring running under the deck to the jacuzzi. Red, black, green and white. Can i tap into those four wires to install a gfi within 20ft of the jacuzzi.
Answer
Usually if there is already wire going to the jacuzzi you can install a 50 Amp GFCI breaker in the panel (be aware that most 50 Amp GFCI Breakers cost around $120 or more) and then just install a disconnect outside near the Jacuzzi to meet code requirements. Square D makes a good outside disconnect called a "QO200TR"approx $20 that our company uses on Hot Tubs, Jacuzzis and AC Units.
