just bought a new hot tub- not heating. why?

Cheryl H

it has been over 5 hours since it was turned on - only 61 degrees now - the deliverymen didn't bring the manual and won't get it for 4 more days. It is a phoenixspa.
the startup temp was 54 - it reached 61 after 9 hours so we turned it off for the night (to save elect.) this am at 6:30, it dropped to 60 and now at 5:45 pm, it has reached a whoppING 70! I figure that it must be catching up to the daytime high of 85. the last tub we had reached temp in 6 hours. the assembly said that it was 240v 5.5kw. i don't know if that's the actual heater or not, but it sounds like we may have to upgrade to a bigger heater. Would that save $$$$ too?

Answer
They would have properly wired it, so not having the proper voltage to the heater won't be the issue. All spa packs are wired in one control box. If the pump is working as it should, the heater is also going to work. Look at your control panel for your thermostat. I'm not familiar with that manufaturer, but most units these days have the thermostat built into an LED or LCD screened control on the top rail. If not, it'll be a manual adjustment behind the skirt panel on the side the pump is located at.
I do have a question, however. What was the initial temp? If you're getting 2-4 degree rise per hour, I wouldn't be worrying too much yet. You may only have a 3 KW heater in there and they can sometimes take a day and a half before getting the spa up over 95 degrees or so.
One thing that will help. Keep that cover on. Even a properly heating tub will ose a lot of heat when you leave that cover off. Typically more than the heater can provide, unless you upgraded to a 5 Kw heater or more.
Edit: Okies, for starters,The owner needs to keep his fingers away from the off button. Turning it off, won't save you money, it'll cost more. Tubs as a rule need that filtration. They're a dirty environment. The heater also won't work, when the tub is off.
5.5 kw is a good heater size for a 4 person tub. It's just "ok" for a 6. In 9 hours, you ought to have gotten more heat, however. Are you sure you've set the temp correctly? It does sound like you haven't got the thermostat set right.
And no...going up to a larger heater won't save you, it'll cost more. Much more to run. To be frank, it doesn't sound like you did much research before your purchase. Hot Tubs and pools are fairly expensive to maintain properly. Tubs especially so, because of possible health risks in letting them slip.I'm afraid that you WILL be spending money to run it.

My boyfriend wants a hot tub or something in the room. We are both smokers and have 2 small (5 and 7) children. Would also like 2 beds in the room. I have looked on travelocity and orbitz but it doesn't ask about a hot tub in the room. Any suggestions?
