Q. When I buy my first house, I'm going to consider buying a hot tub. I just love them, they are very relaxing. I've priced a few and found one at $3,000. I'm just wondering what's the cost of maintaining a hot tub?
Answer
This answer depends on a bunch of different factors. Direct tub costs on a month to month basis will be electricity and chemicals. The general rule of the thumb is the bigger the tub the more expensive its going to be to maintain. For electrical costs, most newer spas are fairly well insulated so keeping them heated might only cost you $20-50/month depending on the size of the tub. For chemicals, this cost completely depends on how lazy you are. But basically, smaller tubs use less chemicals because they're smaller, compared to their larger cousins. However, smaller tubs "go off" faster because they have smaller volume. If you keep up with cleaning the tub and maintaining the chemical balance on a weekly basis it will be cheaper for you in the long run. If you "forget" that you have tub in the backyard and use it sporadically then you'll be spending more money to get back to normal. Generally speaking, if you maintain a good chemical balance you can avoid the big costs of fixing damage equipment.
Other costs include buying new filters every few years (cost depends on the make/model of the spa, $10-$200 average is $50). New spa cover every 3-4 years (cost depends on make/model, budget around $300-$600). Replacing damaged jets/pillows every few years because they just wear out (cost depends on spa make/model and may or may not be included in the warranty so make sure).
Hope this helps.

Hot tubs??

Lea
Hello!
Where is a good place to get a hot tub in NY for a really good deal.
money is running low.
thanks!
Answer
shop around for a used one in good condition. New ones are quite expensive. We bought our house with one so we didn't have to shop. Friends have bought new ones and they were pricey.
Also, on the new ones, they are regulated at 100 deg for safety reasons...and that seems to be all brands. For most people that ain't hot enough. Shop around before you buy for sure.
Hope this helps. :)
