Okay, I keep reading about all the reasons I shouldn't go in a hot tub during pregnancy and most make sense, but I think the duration plays a key factor, does it not? Even if the water is over 101 degrees, doesn't it take some time to raise your body temperature? I don't think a person's body temperature increases as soon as you go into the hot tub.
I'm 10 weeks pregnant and I went in the hot tub last night for no more than 10 minutes. I know the water temperature was over 101 degrees, but it was at night (so it wasn't hot at all; it was slightly chilly) and I made a point to continuously get in and out of the water every minute or so to cool myself off and make sure that I wasn't completely submerging myself from the neck down for more than 5-10 seconds at a time. I think I'm safe to assume that my baby is okay, right?
Here's a quote from the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book: "It's probably a good idea to refrain from LONG STAYS in the hot tub. Anything that raises the body temperature the body temperature over 102 degrees and KEEPS IT THERE FOR A WHILE is potentially hazardous to the developing embryo or fetus...Some studies have shown that a hot tub doesn't raise a woman's temperature to dangerous levels IMMEDIATELY--it takes at least TEN MINUTES..."
I capitalized the key words of the quote...so, duration does matter, right?? it's not so black and white...
Here's something else I found:

hopefully your baby is OK... but next time maybe you should only stick your feet in. i don't know how long it takes to raise your body temp, but I'm not about to get into a hot tub for ANY amount of time. i don't want to risk hurting my baby even for a minute.

Hot Tub dangers during pregnancy?

what?
I am 7 weeks pregnant. I got in the a hot tub for about 15 min, but I did not put my whole body inside, just my lower body, and I had on a wet shirt. I was warm, but not uncormfortable. Is that dangerous?
Answer
I have a hot tub. My Dr. said it's okay as long as the temp isn't above 99 degrees and I don't stay in any longer than 1 cycle (15 minutes). I am 23 weeks pregnant. Good luck!
