I live in an older building in a large city, and the tub has the three-knob style (hot, cold, and the knob in the middle to change the water source from tub to shower). The water sometimes switches from scalding to cold in a snap, requiring constant adjusting while showering. Is there an easy way to fix this myself, because the landlord seems uninterested?

Answer
Lots of possible causes.
The entire building could be on a network Hot Water Boiler. This means hot water is fed to many other fixtures besides your apartment.
Usage by many people can cause this hot/cold spurts.
You could have a temperature mixing valve on your water heater that is in need of repairs. This mixing valve protects tenants from scalding hot water, and mixes hot and cold preventing you from running just hot only which could be in excess of 120 degrees.
You may ask others in the building if they are experiencing the same problem, if so they approach the landlord as a group. Remind him/her that there could be a safety issue arise if one of you should get scalding with hot water. This may be enough to get his attention. I would make that notice legal by sending him a letter from several tenants with the date of your first request for this to be fixed. Send it registered mail, with a return receipt that shows he did sign and accept the letter.
Good documentation is the best tool you can have.

What feeding suggestions would you give for a 5 yr old thoroughbred mare who is thin?

She is currently fed twice a day at each feeding she receives: a large coffee tin 3/4 full of 10% sweet grain, two hand fulls of alfalfa cubes and 1/2 bale of brome hay. We also give her a scoop of senior focus in the morning for added nutrition. We wormed her last week and have no medical history as to when it was done prior.

I'm in California and if I have a horse who's starting to look a bit "ribby" or I've purchased some rack of bones, I go out and buy a 50LB sack of A&M (Ground alfafa and molasses) (In the mid west they use beet pulp BUT I've been informed that you HAVE to add water to it or it will swell in a horse's belly causing colic), dump it into a tub or feeder in the horse's stall, then top it with some rolled barley corn that is mixed with corn oil and apple cider vinegar. (I feed a 3LB coffee can of the barley corn mixture once a day.) The horse will normally devour the first couple of bags of A&M, but then they will slack off as they get used to it (Never had an issue with colic or founder)...

I haven't fed oats or any mixed feed in decades, basically because I've had running horses and TBs I'm trying to keep quiet, so I feed the rolled barley corn mixture to them for weight, NOT heat.

I also give my horses a hot bran mash twice a week with a 1/2 CUP of apple cider vinegar and corn oil (I can mix the barleycorn into it.). I feed 1/2 a 3 LB coffee can of red wheat flakey bran and add enough water to it so that it looks like oatmeal in consistancy.

I make sure that they get 2 flakes of alfafa hay per feeding.
