I know I'm not supposed to raise my body temperature too much. I was wanting to use the hot tub to help my back feel better. It's been hurting so bad lately. I guess my main question is how long is too long to sit in it. I was going to just do a couple minutes at a time so I don't get too hot, that way it will help my back relax a little. Thanks.

Answer
As a massage therapist with knowledge of hydrotherapy (including use of hot tubs), I can say that not only use of the hot tub is contraindicated, but as some suggested a massage, that too, is prohibited (at least in the first trimester).

Your body is at greatest risk for miscarriage in the first few months of pregnancy for many reasons; however, as you have low back pain, I suggest plenty of stretching (if possible) and rolling up a towel or two and placing it beneath your knees when lying down.

Also, it is not harmful in many cases to receive massage on your face, hands, and feet. I empathize, as a client of mine this year could hardly wait until she was out of her first trimester to schedule regular prenatal massage with me!

I strongly suggest calling your physician to double check any advice you receive via Yahoo! Answers or well-meaning friends.

What can I do about my apartments unfair decision?

I live in a nice apt complex with 2 pools and a hot tub. This is my first summer here and the mgmt has posted flyers saying that they will close the pools for the season if they see one more violation i.e. glass at the pool or people at the pool after closing time. Which sucks because half the time people at the pool aren't tenants of the complex. I have not broken those rules. The hottub is also broken and they won't pay the cost to repair it again. Do I have any recourse here since my rent will stay the same but they are taking away benefits I picked this complex for? I know it sounds silly but just wondered if this ever happened to you or what could I do about it?

Answer
There is strength in numbers. Make up a petition and have the other tenants sign it regarding these issues. If management won't cooperate, take your grievances to an attorney and he will contact the owners in your behalf.

Apartment managers are just that: managers. They really have no authority other than what the owner of the complex gives them. Your beef is with the owner(s). The hot tub repair needs a go ahead from the owners. Until management gets it, their hands are tied.

Now, having said that, the managers are right in restricting pool use if the rules are being abused. If all the tenants work together and report infractions, perhaps the management will see that you are serious about keeping the pools open.

Unfortunately, sometimes litigation (or the threat of) is necessary to get the fat cat owners off their duffs and do what is right.
