My mother and sister said its bad to take a bubble bath while pregnant and not to do it. Are they right??

Answer
The "Old Wives Tale" originating pre-1800's about taking baths during pregnancy was based on the fact that people thought germs or bacteria could enter the woman's vagina and make the baby sick.

It's totally false though. Baths are actually GOOD for you when you're pregnant. Also our sewage systems / sanitation / cleanliness of water are better standards these days - people back then used to have 8-12 people using one tub's worth of water.

The thing you DO need to be cautious of though is the temperature of the bath itself. Be sure that you avoid the use of hot tubs and hot baths (above 100 degrees F). These can cause your body temperature to rise, and this can cause problems for a developing baby, particularly in the first trimester.

Enjoy your bath just make sure it's of a normal temperature (not scalding). I'm 36 weeks pregnant and have had a bath practically every day throughout my pregnancy. Our baby was scanned on Tuesday and all is perfect - he's a healthy 5lb 10 already and everything is in perfect working order :)

Enjoy your pregnancy - it's one of the most magical things ever!

I had a misscarriage about three months ago and didnt get answers but im almost positive that it was because of my kittie litter, and the thing is i didnt even know i had to avoid kitty litter so now i am seeking all the information out i can because i cant go through another misscarriage - please help - what things should i avoid?

Answer
Ok so here is what to avoid:

1. obvious, alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs
2.Deli meats and salads â Cold cuts, and tuna or egg salad from a deli can also be contaminated with Listeria bacteria.
3. Cat litter â This can contain a parasite called Toxoplasmois gondii, which causes Toxoplasmosis, a disease that can be fatal to your fetus. Have someone else change your catâs litter box; if you must do it, wash your hands thoroughly and carefully after changing the box yourself.
Certain large fish â Shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel are all known to contain high levels of methyl mercury (thanks to industrial pollution in ponds, lakes and oceans). Mercury can damage the nervous system, especially in children and unborn babies. Visit the EPAâs Web site (www.epa.gov/ost/fish) for more information on risky seafood in different regions of the country.

⢠Over-the-counter medications â Limit these to remedies considered safe throughout pregnancy, including the pain reliever acetaminophen (Tylenol), antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra, many antacids and prescribed narcotic pain relievers. Pain relievers like aspirin and those containing ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), and the diarrhea medicine Pepto Bismol should be avoided because of their link to birth defects. Always check with your doctor before taking any medicine to be sure that itâs safe for you.

⢠Raw or undercooked meat, fish, eggs, and unpasteurized milk â These foods can carry bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli, which can make you sick and harm your fetus. Donât eat any eggs with a runny yolk, and cook beef to at least 160º F.

⢠Saunas and hot tubs â Studies have linked elevated body temperatures (102º F) to neural tube defects and miscarriages. (Also, be cautious with electric blankets, particularly during the first trimester, because of elevated body temperature.)

Limit

⢠Caffeine â Limit your intake to less than 300 milligrams a day (about two cups of coffee). The FDA has deemed moderate caffeine use as safe. But look into the amount of caffeine in your favorite beverages and foods; it can vary, according to Aron. One 8-ounce cup of coffee can contain anywhere from 57 to 350 milligrams; an 8-ounce cup of tea, up to 110 milligrams; a 12-ounce can of cola, up to 100 milligrams; a chocolate bar, about 30 milligrams; and a single espresso or cappuccino, about 100 milligrams.

⢠Hair dyes â Studies have not shown hair dyes to be harmful to a fetus, but the FDA recommends being careful if youâre pregnant. Researchers have found that low levels of the dye can be absorbed into the skin and excreted into the urine. Limit your use of hair dye to after your first trimester, Aron advises, and use techniques that shorten your exposure to the dye.

⢠Soft cheeses â Limit your intake to soft domestic cheeses made with pasteurized milk. Otherwise, avoid cheeses such as brie, camembert, Roquefort, feta, gorgonzola, as well as Mexican style queso blanco and queso fresco. These may contain the Listeria bacteria, which can cause miscarriage.

Congrats On your Pregnancy!!!!! :)
