Bart
We just acquired an above ground huge hot tub, about 7X7 feet square. It has a sealed bottom.
The prior owner didnât plug up all the holes in the cabinet, so rats and mice got in. I know rodents can squeeze thru an opening the size of a quarter. Anyway, we are in the process of cleaning out the cabinet of the tub to remove this odor. We have already found four dead rats in the foam, and there probably are more. This is a severe infestation. For those of you who donât know, the bottom side of most hottubs are coated with very thick coating of yellow expandable foam (similar to the expanding foam insulation spray you buy at Home Depot.)
All of this foam on the bottom side of this tub is saturated with urine. There is a neverending maze of tunnels that these rodents made all throughout the bottom of this hottub by chewing it up. The smell is utterly unbearable.
We are in the process of removing all of the foam to see what we are up against. Our plan is to remove the foam, and clean the best we can, then spray with new foam. Even the wooden frame supports smell like urine.
Unfortunately, weâve removed most of the foam, and the smell is still there!
I have a product called âurine offâ which I bought online, and it attacks the smell by coating the uric acid crystals in the urine, however, itâs not working as well as we had hoped and the smell is still present.
Tell me what you think of my idea of using a paint product such as Kilns or Zinsser's B-I-N to cover up and seal the smell, then spray in new expandable foam over top. Remember the bottom of this hottub will never be seen, so we donât care what it looks like.
Please, any ideas here of how we can better remove this strong urine smell?
Thanks in advance
Answer
If the tub is full of water do you still smell the odor? The foam insulation is usually a poly urea compound and the urea odor lingers for years. My suggestion is to fill the tub and use it or get another unit because the smell is something you are stuck with. The compound I use for urine removal is called Natures Miracle.

Answer
Try a local spa dealer. Hot tubs need chlorine. They might have the chlorine and test kit. You can also substitute regular, liquid, laundry bleach
