After visiting Portland a month ago I feel I want to move there. I found an apartment I like and can afford on Beaverton-Hills Dale near Olson. I woun't have a car. How is public bus service in this area?

My first choice was Nob Hill and the Pearl District. These areas are way out of my price range. The Hawthorn district is not my style.

Is the Beaverton Hillsdale(Raliegh Hills) a safe section of Portland? The apartment I like is a block from the Albertsons Market. I'm a 27 year old white male.
If I'm looking to meet other young people will I be unhappy in the Beaverton Hillsdale area?
Will other young people judge me poorly if I live in the Beaverton Hillsdale area? I'm moving from Southern California.

Answer
Buses run regularly on the Beaverton/Hillsdale highway. And
you wouldn't have to walk far to a bus stop. Buy an umbrella
tho, for rainy days in the fall and winter tho. The shopping
hub has Fred Meyers nearby, and an Irish pub and a few restaurants. It's amazing that you found an affordable apart-
ment in that location. I used to live on SW Dosch so I'm fam-
liar with the area.
If you take the bus further down into Beaverton, you will
find shopping and more restaurants (Mexican, Chinese, etc)
And the Beaverton Fred Meyers (one stop shopping with
food, clothes, pharmacy, etc)
The area is as safe as most really are these days. Get a
security lock for your front door and put sticks inside your
windows to brace the openings, if you feel safer. I never had
the need though. It's an old money area with alot of retirees,
and so you will probably have to go to a pub or public
places to hook up with those your own age. But maybe there
will be some in your apartment complex. You'll probably
run into many at Freddies, where alot of people shop for
their convenience. Albertsons, does have better produce
usually tho. I think that one, has a high amount of Jewish
customers for their Jewish food/deli area. I found it was
the only store I've ever been to that had that available.
The next main drag over, is Canyon Road, looking north.
And they have many restaurants, and car lots and apartments
off of Canyon. We lived in a very upscale apt. there at one
time. Probably the nicest we ever found in Portland. The
living room and dining area was huge, with a high beamed
ceiling. I can't remember the name of it right now tho. It was
great for entertaining. It had an outdoor pool, hot tub and exercise stuff inside. It was very close to a residential area.
But once you get settled, you can check further around your
living area to see what's available. Canyon does also have
buses running down and up. But driving does have its' ad-
vantages for convenience.
I hope you find the area to your liking. It is one of my more
favorite areas to live in. I felt safe living over there, and had
everything so close by. Good luck on your move!
